Redford and Estevez films to make debut at Toronto
TORONTO - World premieres by directors Robert Redford and Emilio Estevez are among the highlights of this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which will feature a slimmer lineup of movies than in years past. The 35th edition will screen about 290 films, below the typical roster of around 350 titles, the festival's CEO and director, Piers Handling, said on Tuesday. There were 312 films in 2009, a year when the independent film industry was wracked by the recession.
Yoko Ono opposes parole for John Lennon's killer
NEW YORK - Yoko Ono will again oppose the release of the man who nearly 30 years ago killed her husband, former Beatle John Lennon, and who comes up for parole next month, her lawyer said. Ono has consistently opposed parole for Mark David Chapman and has again sent a letter to the parole board, her lawyer, Peter Shukat, told the Daily News.
Haitian singer Wyclef Jean weighs presidential bid
PORT-AU-PRINCE - Haitian singer and songwriter Wyclef Jean is weighing a bid for the presidency of his earthquake-shattered Caribbean homeland but has not yet decided whether to run in November's election. In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the family of the former Fugees star, who has served as ambassador-at-large under the current Haitian government, confirmed for the first time that he was considering putting his hip-hop infused music career on the backburner to run for Haiti's top job.
James Bond producers worried by indefinite delay
LOS ANGELES - The "James Bond 007: Blood Stone" video game event in London this month had all the class and splash one would expect from the world's most elegant spy. Guests sipped Champagne in the historic former church venue One Marylebone and inspected pieces of Bond memorabilia including Oddjob's hat from "Goldfinger" and Jaws' famous teeth. The event even featured a video game Bond girl in a stunning black evening dress, the Brit songstress Joss Stone who belts out the game's theme song.
Jersey Shore's Snooki, The Situation juice the NYSE
NEW YORK - "Gorilla juiceheads" fist-pumped on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning as the cast of "Jersey Shore" kicked off trading in one of the more anticipated opening bell ceremonies in some time. Traders on the increasingly quiet floor said it was one of the most crowded days in years as the deeply tanned cast of the MTV hit rang the bell and stayed to sign autographs amid a crush of onlookers and a flood of media.
"Idol" faces big changes as former producer returns
LOS ANGELES - Reality producer Nigel Lythgoe is returning to executive produce Fox's "American Idol" after a two-year break -- and that could spell trouble for the current judges panel. Fox is near a deal to bring back Lythgoe to work on the hit series as part of a master plan to reboot the show following the exit of top judge Simon Cowell.

Daniel Craig to star in "Tattoo" remake
LOS ANGELES - Daniel Craig will star in the English-language remake of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," plus the two potential follow-ups based on author Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy. David Fincher is on board to direct the adaptation, which Steve Zaillian is writing and Scott Rudin is producing for film studio Sony Pictures.
Obama to make historic visit to talk show "The View"
LOS ANGELES - President Barack Obama will appear on female chat show "The View" on Thursday, in what the ABC network said on Monday was the first appearance by a sitting U.S. president on a daytime TV talk show. Obama's July 29 appearance will be taped on Wednesday. He will be asked about jobs, the economy, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and family life inside the White House, ABC said in a statement.
Filmmaker Oliver Stone slammed for anti-Semitism
NEW YORK - The U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League on Monday slammed filmmaker Oliver Stone for comments he made to The Sunday Times of London, calling the film director's views "anti-Semitic." Abraham Foxman, ADL national director, said: "Oliver Stone has once again shown his conspiratorial colors with his comments about 'Jewish domination of the media' and control over U.S. foreign policy. His words conjure up some of the most stereotypical and conspiratorial notions of undue Jewish power and influence."
