Nokia plans one Linux phone next year: source
HELSINKI - Nokia plans to install Linux software on just one new smartphone next year, a source told Reuters on Monday, dampening prospects of a quick makeover of the Finnish group's struggling product line-up. The Finnish firm has started to invest more in Internet services in recent years, seeking to counter falling handset prices and increased competition in smartphones from the likes of Apple and Blackberry-maker RIM.
Amazon says Kindle sales hit monthly record in Nov
NEW YORK - Amazon.com said on Monday that its Kindle electronic book reader posted its best sales yet in the month of November, as rivals struggle with fulfilling their customer orders. The online retailer said shoppers were buying several Kindles at once as holiday gifts, while businesses and organizations were buying the device "in large quantities" for employees or clients. Amazon does not provide precise data on Kindle sales.
Sirius XM CEO says holiday sales on target
NEW YORK - Holiday sales of Sirius XM Radio's satellite radio players are so far matching expectations, helped in part by an advertising blitz featuring footage of Elvis Presley and Michael Jordan. Sirius XM Chief Executive Mel Karmazin told Reuters that early retail store checks indicated that sales "were very much on target to what we anticipated" since the U.S. holiday shopping season unofficially kicked off on Friday.
EBay fined by Paris court over LVMH sales
CHICAGO for violating a 2008 injunction that prevents French users of the online auction site from buying or selling LVMH <LVMH.PA> perfumes and cosmetics on any eBay website. EBay Inc <EBAY.O> said on Monday that the Commercial Court of Paris' fine was too high and that the injunction blocking French eBay users from buying or selling LVMH cosmetics, including Christian Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy and Kenzo perfumes, hurts consumers.
Barnes & Noble delays Nook shipments to stores
SAN FRANCISCO - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> said on Sunday it would delay shipments of its newly launched Nook electronic reader to stores as the company strives to deliver preordered devices to consumers before the holidays. "We expect to have them in our highest-volume stores on December 7th and in a very limited number," Barnes & Noble spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating told Reuters. The company had earlier hoped to have a limited number of e-readers in some of its stores around November 30, she said.
Black Friday Web shopping up 11 pct - report
SAN FRANCISCO - Holiday shoppers in the United States spent some $595 million online on Black Friday, up 11 percent from last year, with Amazon.com and Walmart.com the most visited sites, according to analytics firm comScore. Visits to Amazon.com <AMZN.O> rose 28 percent, followed by the online unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc <WMT.N>, which grew 22 percent. The two companies have already engaged in a heated battle for market share this holiday, with each lowering prices on select merchandise.
Black Friday shoppers tweet, friend and clip
SAN FRANCISCO - Before deciding where to buy a laptop for his daughter on Black Friday, Nate Bryan was scouring the web for deals. But he was not just looking at retailers' websites. "I use Twitter and Facebook a lot for Black Friday," he said, referring to the day after Thanksgiving when retailers open their doors early and offer eye-popping deals. "People interested in computers post what they see online."
Nokia-Siemens CEO says focus on market share: report
HELSINKI - Ailing telecom equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks <NSN.UL> has changed its business focus to increasing its market share, the new chief executive of the venture was quoted as saying on Sunday. "In early 2008 we made a strategic decision to focus more on cash flow and profitability than on the market share. Now it's time to give it up and to focus solely on the market share," Rajeev Suri told Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat.
Samsung set to beat 2009 handset sales target
SEOUL - Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, the world's No. 2 mobile phone maker, gave an upbeat forecast for 2009 mobile phone sales due to sharp growth in touchscreen models, but surging sales may not guarantee higher margins. Growing competition for market share could put Samsung under pressure to lower prices in the high-margin touchscreen phones, with iPhone's debut in the domestic market last week set to challenge Samsung and home-town rival LG Electronics <066570.KS>.
Activision says "Call of Duty" series tops $3 billion
SAN FRANCISCO - Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> said on Friday its "Call of Duty" video game franchise pushed past the $3 billion mark in global retail sales. Overall, the "Call of Duty" series has sold more than 55 million units since its launch in 2003, Activision said, citing data compiled by NPD Group, Charttrack, GfK and internal company estimates.
