Beijing to lend 29 Qing Dynasty relics to Taiwan
AP - 2 hours 10 minutes ago
BEIJING - Beijing will lend 29 Qing Dynasty relics to Taiwan's National Palace Museum for a joint exhibit this fall, state media said Monday, in the first major cultural exchange since the two sides split amid civil war six decades ago.

The official China Daily said authorities agreed to provide several portraits of the Qing Dynasty's 18th century Emperor Yongzheng from the Forbidden City, or Beijing Palace Museum, for a three-month exhibition beginning in October in Taipei.
The announcement came during a landmark visit to China by the director of Taiwan's world-renowned museum, Chou Kung-shin. On Sunday, agreements were signed on personnel exchange, cooperation in academic research, exhibits and publishing.
Her visit marks a major thaw in relations over the highly sensitive issue of Chinese cultural relics removed from the Forbidden City during wartime.
In the waning stages of the Chinese civil war, the forces of Nationalist strongman Chiang Kai-shek moved 600,000 items of Chinese calligraphy, porcelain, bronzes, landscape paintings, portraiture and figurines from the imperial collection to Taiwan.
The massive art transfer created the world's greatest museum of Chinese art in Taiwan at the expense of its counterpart on the mainland.
Taiwan has long defended the decision, saying it was a necessary step to save China's cultural heritage from Mao Zedong's Communists. China says the art was stolen and rightfully belongs to Beijing.
China also considers the self-ruled, democratic island of Taiwan as a renegade territory, and ultimately wants reunification.
However, relations have steadily thawed after last year's election of Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou who took office promising to promote cross-strait reconciliation.
Chou heads to Shanghai on Monday to discuss the possibility of holding a joint exhibition at the 2010 World Expo, the newspaper said.
She has said there are obstacles to Taiwan lending antique pieces to China, saying Beijing must first sign agreements to guarantee the items' safe return. Beijing's position is that there is one palace museum, and the collection in Taiwan belongs to it.
