More red ink for McClatchy
AFP - Friday, April 24
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - McClatchy Co. reported a quarterly net loss of 37.7 million dollars on Thursday as a drop in both print and digital advertising revenue sent the third-largest US newspaper chain deeper into the red.

McClatchy, which owns the Miami Herald, Sacramento Bee and 30 other daily newspapers, said advertising revenue in the first quarter was down 29.5 percent from the same quarter a year ago to 284.7 million dollars.
Overall revenue for the Sacramento, California-based company, which posted a net loss of 993,000 dollars in the first three months of last year, fell 25.1 percent in the first quarter of this year to 365.6 million dollars.
Circulation revenue improved slightly on higher prices -- up 0.9 percent to 68.5 million dollars.
Like other US newspaper chains, McClatchy has been grappling with a steep drop in print advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online.
While a drop in print advertising revenue for the quarter had been expected, McClatchy said online advertising revenue also fell.
Digital advertising revenue declined 4.7 percent in the first quarter, dragged down by a steep slide in employment advertising. It said that if help-wanted ads were excluded, digital revenue grew by 28.7 percent.
"As anticipated, our advertising revenues in the first quarter of 2009 were weaker than the fourth quarter of 2008 and reflect the widening economic recession," McClatchy chairman and chief executive Gary Pruitt said.
"The impact of the downturn had largely been limited to print advertising in 2008, but in the first quarter of 2009 it began to have a greater effect on digital advertising as well," he added in a statement.
"Still, all categories of digital advertising are outperforming print advertising," Pruitt said, adding that digital advertising represented 15.3 percent of total advertising revenue, up from 11.6 percent last year.
Besides its 30 daily newspapers, McClatchy also owns 50 non-dailies and a number of websites, including a share of online job site CareerBuilder.
McClatchy last month announced plans to eliminate 1,600 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce, because of falling advertising revenue and the weak economy.
McClatchy shares lost nearly five percent on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday following the earnings announcement and were trading at 53 cents.
McClatchy was informed by the NYSE last week that it may be delisted because of its low share price.
