ShareThis April 7, 2010 1:40 p.m. EST Topics: human interest, politics, offbeat, curiosity, election, national elections, United States Kris Alingod - AHN News Contributor Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - Stormy Daniels, an adult film star who is considering a Senate campaign in Louisiana, has left the Democratic Party, citing the GOP's demonstration of "libertarian values" when it spent party funds at a Hollywood sex club. Two top Republican officials have resigned over the scandal. In a tongue-in-cheek statement that critics said was a continuation of a political stunt, Daniels said recent events at Voyeur, a lesbian bondage-themed club in Los Angeles, prompted her to make the difficult decision. "It is time again to inspire positive risks and out-of-the-box thinking in the interest of growing a strong economy and a strong America," WGNO quotes her as saying. "For me, this spirit can be summed up in the RNC's investment of donor funds at Voyeur. I know from experience that a mere $1900 outlay at a club with the reputation of Voyeur is a clear indication of a frugal investment with a keen eye toward maximum return." A registered Democrat throughout her life before switching parties, the 31-year-old added, "Now I cannot help but recognize that over time my libertarian values regarding both money and sex and the legal use of one for the other is now best espoused by the Republican Party." Daniels has been exploring running for the seat of Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), whose incumbency has been clouded by his ties to an escort service. She went on a statewide listening tour last year that gained national attention, but maintained a low profile following her arrest for assaulting her husband in their Tampa home over an argument about chores and bills. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has responded to her announcement by accusing Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA), the only Democrat officially in the race so far, of enlisting the porn star to challenge Vitter in a GOP primary. “It’s telling that Charlie Melancon’s campaign is doing so poorly that his campaign manager had to recruit his old friend and former colleague from past Democrat political campaigns to run Ms. Daniels as a Republican sideshow," NRSC Press Secretary Amber Marchand said in a statement to the Bayou Buzz. "Louisiana voters deserve better than shameless antics like this from Melancon and his Democrat friends." Melancon, a co-chairman of a group of fiscally conservative House Democrats called the Blue Dog Coalition, launched his Senate campaign in August, touting his record as a businessman and casting himself as a "pro-life, pro-gun" centrist "proud family man." Vitter is seeking a second term this year despite admitting in 2007 that he had ties to an escort service owned by Deborah Palfrey, the woman dubbed the D.C. Madam. He made his admission when phone records ordered released by a judge showed his number appearing in a February 2001 list. The senator had been subpoenaed to testify but the trial on the prostitution case ended in April 2008 without him taking the stand. The D.C. Madam was found guilty of operating a prostitution ring but she committed suicide before she was sentenced. The Republican Party lost its chief of staff and a top fundraiser this week after a federal finance disclosure report showed it spending $1,946 at Voyeur in January to entertain a donor, and its chairman, Michael Steele, spending thousands the next month on chartered planes and stays at the Four Seasons and the Beverly Hills Hotel. Daniels is expected to announce her decision on whether to launch a campaign on April 15.
