Institutional selling due to fund redemptions pressured the market, analysts said, but the foreign buying streak will likely continue to support shares. Korean shares have gained about 6 percent in the past month. "At the index's current level, investors who got into market via equity funds a couple years back are going to see gains of some 10 to 20 percent, and they want to lock in that gain," said Yoo Soo-min, a market analyst at Hyundai Securities. "Foreign buying of emerging market stocks, particularly South Korea, Taiwan and India, is due to current low-interest rate environment worldwide, and as investors seek growth sectors in expanding economies," Yoo added. But news that Greece's borrowing costs hit a new high on Wednesday after the government said the country's banks had asked for billions of euros in support, dented market sentiment. [ID:nLDE636138] The Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> finished 0.42 percent higher at 1,733.78 points, posting a fresh near-22-month closing high. The KOSPI's relative strength index touched 70 taking brushing against a technically overbought zone and the index is not convincingly being able to rise above the 1720 level which is acting as a near-term resistance. Foreign investors were buyers of a net 325 billion won worth of stocks, poised to pick up shares for a 20th session, the longest buying streak since August, 2009. Institutions were sellers of a net 290.6 billion worth. Key technology issues rose, with Hynix Semiconductor ending up 2.93 percent and LG Display <034220.KS> advancing 1.74 percent. "Hynix had briefly undergone corrections on a profit-locking spree, but as its fundamentals remained solid, buying has renewed," said Park Hyun, an analyst at Prudential Investment & Securities, adding the memory chip industry's positive trend is expected to continue through the second quarter of this year. But banks retreated, with KB Financial Group <105560.KS> down 1.32 percent and Hana Financial Group <086790.KS> down 0.59 percent. "As institutions make adjustments to their portfolio, banks became the preferred selling picks," said Shim Kyu-sun, an analyst at HI Investment Securities. Shares in Daewoo Motor Sales <004550.KS> rose 8.11 percent after its lead creditor Korea Development Bank confirmed the firm has asked KDB to allow a debt rescheduling programme for the troubled car distributor.[ID:nTOE63701T] Shares in Ssangyong Motor jumped nearly 15 percent amid strengthening sale hopes, after the company official said it had started the sale process and was currently working on due diligence.
