Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology US-TECH Summary Reuters - Saturday, January 9 Send IM Story Print Tablet? Slate? New devices emerge as Apple looms LAS VEGAS - Call it a "slate" or call it a "tablet," the technology world is suddenly awash with a novel category of mobile devices seeking to grab the spotlight from a hugely anticipated product launch by Apple Inc <AAPL.O> later this month. Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N>, Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>, Dell Inc <DELL.O>, Motorola Inc <MOT.N> and Lenovo Group Ltd <0992.HK> are among a barrage of companies showing off thin, touchscreen, multimedia devices at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. Intel unveils new microprocessors SAN FRANCISCO/LAS VEGAS - Intel Corp <INTC.O> released a flurry of new computer chips on Thursday as it seeks to maintain its dominance over rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc <AMD.N> and prepare for an expected rise in demand. The new microprocessors, designed to power desktop and laptop PCs, are the first of a new generation of chips featuring smaller transistors that Intel said will juice performance and improve energy efficiency. Verizon to sell two Palm phones on Jan 25 LAS VEGAS - Palm Inc <PALM.O> will sell upgraded versions of its Pre and Pixi smartphones on January 25 through top U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Wireless, getting its devices into more users' hands. Palm had been expected to announce the deal with Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Vodafone <VOD.L> and Verizon Communications <VZ.N>, after AT&T Inc <T.N> said it planned to sell two Palm phones in the first half of this year. Motorola shows media tablet with Nvidia chip LAS VEGAS - Motorola Inc <MOT.N> demonstrated a prototype media tablet that could be ready commercially by the fourth quarter, though whether it goes to market partly depends on an advanced mobile network being built by Verizon Wireless. A slew of tech companies are showing off new slate or tablet PCs at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, seeking to steal the limelight from a widely expected tablet from Apple Inc <AAPL.O> in late January. Google seeks U.S. approval to trade wholesale power WASHINGTON - Google Inc <GOOG.O> has asked the main U.S. energy regulator for authority to buy and sell electricity in the wholesale market to help manage its huge energy needs, as the Internet giant's big data centers soak up large amounts of power. In its filing to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in late December, the company said its Google Energy LLC subsidiary wants the authority "to contain and manage the cost of energy for Google." Borders in deal with Alex e-reader for e-books NEW YORK - Borders Group Inc <BGP.N> said on Thursday it has reached a deal with the maker of the upcoming Alex electronic reader that will prominently feature the U.S. bookseller's e-bookstore on the device when the site is launched later this year. The Alex e-reader will give the borders.com e-book site top billing, featuring it on its initial screen, a Borders spokeswoman told Reuters, though shoppers will be able to buy and read books from other sources on their Alex e-reader. Cellular group says mobile calls safe from hackers BOSTON - A wireless industry group said mobile phone conversations are safe from eavesdropping, even after a German security expert released the code for unscrambling calls made using most of the world's cell phones. Concerns spread last week that cell phone calls could easily be intercepted after encryption expert Karsten Nohl unveiled his research at Europe's largest hacking conference, in Berlin. Sony positive on gadget sales LAS VEGAS . Dell displays small slate computer, runs Android LAS VEGAS - Dell Inc <DELL.O> showed off a small slate computer that it could bring to market this year, exploring yet another type of device designed for computing on the go. So-called slate and tablet PCs are a hot topic at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, ahead of a highly anticipated device from Apple Inc <AAPL.O> that is widely expected to be unveiled in late January. U.S. to delay release of anticipated broadband plan WASHINGTON - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission will delay submitting its highly anticipated National Broadband Plan report to Congress by one month to better digest all the data and public input, an FCC official said on Thursday. The report, a framework to promote affordable high-speed Internet access and use among Americans, is due to be submitted to Congress on February 17, as mandated by President Barack Obama's massive economic stimulus package.
