LOS ANGELES - Teen sensation Miley Cyrus makes her first appearance as a guest mentor on "American Idol" this week and will perform her latest hit on Wednesday's results show, the Fox television network said on Monday. Cyrus, 17, will give advice to the 11 remaining contestants as they prepare for a week of Billboard Number One hits for Tuesday's live TV performances.
"Alice" stays atop box offices for third week
LOS ANGELES - Disney 3-D adventure "Alice in Wonderland" retained the top spot at North American box offices for a third straight week, collecting $34.5 million and beating three new films including romantic comedy "The Bounty Hunter." "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," based on the first book in the popular series by Jeff Kinney, claimed the No. 2 spot with $21.8 million as children and parents turned out in solid numbers and pushed adult-oriented "Bounty Hunter" to third with $21 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
Conan, Fox resume talks for late-night show
LOS ANGELES - After a two-week stall, Fox and Conan O'Brien have resumed talks about a potential late-night talk show fronted by the former "Tonight Show" host. But a wrinkle in the courtship has emerged that involves the biggest show on television: O'Brien has been approached to take part in Fox's "Idol Gives Back" special April 21.
Craig Ferguson sees Conan debacle as "wake-up call"
LOS ANGELES - Craig Ferguson, host of "The Late Late Show," sees Conan O'Brien's ill-fated stint on "The Tonight Show" as a "wake up call" for himself -- as in, wake up and get away from being labeled "late-night talk show host." "As I watched that, whatever that was, unfold, I realized that I am not part of this -- I am not part of the late-night clubhouse," Ferguson told Reuters. "Don't ever rope me in as a late-night talk show host. I don't want to be one."

For 57 years since 1951, Wagner directed the annual Bayreuth Festival in the southern state of Bavaria. He worked initially alongside his brother, Wieland Wagner, until his death in 1966.
Teen sensation Bieber gears up for busy year
NEW YORK - "He causes riots everywhere he goes, and my mom loves him almost as much as I do!" sputters a blond girl in a bubble-gum-pink sweater, flanked by two other breathless tweens. You'd have to be on a severe pop-culture fast not to know which star they're kvelling over, but in any event, they let his name be heard loud: "Justin Bieeeberrr!" It's 10 o'clock on a Thursday morning, and of the hundreds packed into New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, roughly three dozen are kids who have managed to score VIP seats. Bieber is performing at Nickelodeon's 2010 "upfront" presentation to advertisers, where the youth-centric network is announcing its new slate of programing. After sitting attentively through pitches about "igniting fan position" and supercharging the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, the Biebermaniacs, necks craned, phones and Flip cams in hand, angle to capture a frame of the most famous 16-year-old in the game.
Hurt, Rossellini join "Late Bloomers"

Musicians pay tribute to Alex Chilton at SXSW
AUSTIN, Texas - Alex Chilton, who died of a heart attack Wednesday, three days before the scheduled performance of his band Big Star at the South By Southwest music conference, was memorialized at the Austin event by colleagues, friends and admirers, with words and, most important, with music. After a warmly reverent and nostalgic afternoon panel at the Austin Convention Center -- with Big Star co-founders Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel, latter-day members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, original producer John Frye and others -- Big Star's scheduled showcase that night at Antone's was turned into a kind of musical wake for Chilton, with numerous guests taking turns during the 80-minute show. But the performance was also preceded by more words.
Court says no oil money for Anna Nicole's heirs
LOS ANGELES - A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that the estate of late model Anna Nicole Smith was not entitled to one cent of the more than $300 million she sought from the estate of her billionaire oil baron husband. In the latest twist in a 15-year battle over the estimated $1.6 billion fortune left by Texan J. Howard Marshall, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with his late son, Pierce.
