The government denied that ships fired on the city saying troops were battling gunmen there. The National Organisation for Human Rights in Syria (NOHRS) and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) claimed that dozens were also injured in the attack targeting the suburb of Ramel in southern Latakia. The SOHR, which is based in the U.K., said naval boats fired heavy machine guns forcing residents to flee. The NOHRS said it was the first time that Syria’s military used naval ships to suppress protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad. Latakia’s communication lines and Internet connection were cut while train service to and from the province were suspended, according to activists. The NOHRS also reported two other people killed in Homs, one in Hama and one in Idlib. Meanwhile, 15 military trucks, troop carriers and jeeps brought security forces to the Damascus suburbs of Saqba and Hamriya Saturday 2 a.m. The troops fired shots, cut communication lines and arrested suspected activists.
