The workers were promised by the agency a 1.9 percent salary hike and bonuses averaging 7.8 percent for 2011. However, media reports of the salary increases and bonuses, despite a $16-billion deficit in the province’s 2010 budget, led Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews to order the eHealth board to review the planned hike. Matthews said she asked eHealth’s board to review the promise in order to regain its reputation. The agency was found by the province’s ombudsman to have spent $1 billion, but showed little progress in its mandate to fast track the digitization of health records in Ontario. The agency had announced on May 20 the cancelation of pay raises and bonuses. The disgruntled employees are represented by Toronto law firm Shibley Righton, which sent eHealth a letter that the workers have initiated a class action for breach of contract.
