QVC retail network banks on Obamamania
AFP - Wednesday, January 7
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - US shopping network QVC hopes to cash in on Barack Obama's presidential inauguration this month by selling thousands of souvenirs for commemorative enthusiasts.
Obama's November 4 election as the first African-American president in the United States has unleashed a flood of commercials for related memorabilia on QVC and other television channels.
QVC, which has an audience of some 98 million households, has already sold more than 100,000 Obama coins, stamps, watches, jewelry and portraits, the channel said.
"We are expecting our largest inaugural ever," QVC vice president of multi-channel programming Doug Rose told AFP.
"We believe it's part of our mission to allow our consumers to participate in such an event. There is no bigger event in January than the upcoming inauguration."
QVC, launched in 1986, has sold souvenirs for the 1997, 2001 and 2005 presidential inaugurations.
The channel will broadcast part of the parade on January 20, when Obama will be sworn in, and will also air live that evening from the already sold out Creative Coalition's inaugural ball.
Among the featured items for sale on QVC are an Obama half-dollar coin for 12.50 dollars, a stamp collection for 38.88 dollars and four special edition Obama coins for 46 dollars.
QVC competitor HSN (Home Shopping Network) is also selling Obama items, including coins, pocket watches and portraits.
The shopping channels are not alone in banking on Obama's commercial value.
NBC television network is selling "Yes We Can! The Barack Obama Story," a documentary featuring NBC News election coverage and selection of Obama speeches on DVD for 19.99 dollars.
The New York Times is selling Obama items through its store as well, including the newspaper's November 5, 2008 edition for 14.95 dollars and Obama photographs selling for between 199 and 1,099 dollars, depending on the print's size.
Obama's presidential inauguration committee has also set up a dedicated online store at pic2009.inauguralcollectibles.com.
