2 polytechnics unveil latest rehabilitative aids for patients
Channel NewsAsia - 1 hour 12 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: A special walker for people with disabilities and an SMS tracking devise for the mentally challenged were among some 40 innovative gadgets developed by final year bio—engineering students from the Singapore Polytechnic.
These technological innovations which are worth some S$100,000 will benefit 12 welfare organisations and hospitals in Singapore.
For example, the "elbow flexion motor system" and the "special wheelchair arm rest" have been developed to help stroke patients and those with disabilities.
Each of the devices has been customised to suit the needs of organisations like the Jamiyah Nursing Home and St Luke’s hospital.
Gibson Chan, senior rehabilitation manager, St Luke’s Hospital, said: "We need gadgets and technology to replace our manpower hours. With such an arrangement, we will be able to provide cost—effective treatment to our patients.
"The patients probably pay less but have more intensive therapy. This is the direction we want to move towards so that we can actually help the patients regain movement."
For St Luke’s Hospital, which sees some 500 stroke patients yearly, these rehabilitative aids are expected to provide better treatment, solve its manpower constraints and lower rehabilitative costs borne by patients.
To spur the development of more of such aids, St Luke’s Hospital has signed an MOU with Singapore Polytechnic to explore more collaborative efforts.
Ronny Tham, senior lecturer, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Singapore Poly, said: "There will also be more opportunities for our students to be attached to the hospital and they will be able to see realistically for themselves what is rehabilitation and how rehabilitation is being done in hospitals."
Meanwhile, students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic came up with the Mobile Lumbar Traction Unit, which aims to relieve lower back pain.
Another product, the Throat Muscle Strengthening device, helps people with a swallowing difficulty. The portable device can be used by patients on their own at home without the need for a therapist.
The polytechnics said they will make improvements to the gadgets before marketing them. — CNA/vm
