Primary school committee hears feedback from over 600 persons

Channel NewsAsia - Wednesday, January 7
SINGAPORE: Improving the primary school education system is high on the Education Ministry’s agenda this year.
Since it started its review last October, the Primary Education Review and Implementation Committee has heard from over 600 persons on diverse platforms such as emails, phone calls and focus group sessions.
The last session, a webchat, took place on Monday. Preliminary findings are expected later this month and a full report in March.
Many issues were brought up, including how big a role non—academic subjects should play in early primary school education and whether they should be graded.
Another issue raised was whether all exams could be done away with altogether for at least the Primary 1 and 2 levels.
The opinions on the way forward are as varied as the issues.
Senior Minister of State for Education, Grace Fu, who leads the committee, knows that getting consensus will be tough especially as a number of the issues are contentious.
For example, there is fear that a school may lose a good non—graduate pool of teachers as primary schools move towards having only graduates as teachers.
In addition, some are still concerned that parents will still load their children with extra enrichment classes after school, with all single—session primary schools.
But one thing all agreed on was that the quality of teachers cannot be compromised.
Ms Fu said: "The quality of the mid—career recruitment has been extremely good. People who have worked in the private sector for a few years, they understand the market out there better. ... their expectations of teaching is also very good. So I think it’s not a bad idea for some of them to make the change." — CNA/vm
