ETON, England (AFP) - – Britain's new Prime Minister David Cameron has revived a time-honoured tradition by becoming the 19th former pupil to go on to lead his country after attending Eton College. Eton, one of the most famous schools in the world, is the link between Conservatives like Cameron -- the first Old Etonian premier for 44 years -- and the Liberal William Gladstone, prime minister four times in the late 1800s. Thailand's beleaguered Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva also studied here. Eton remains the school of choice for the aristocracy -- the second-in-line to the throne, Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry, both donned the school's distinctive black gowns and white wing collars. Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, the school -- whose ancient cloisters, finely mown playing fields and rich tradition also nurtured writer George Orwell and the poet Shelley -- now educates 1,300 boys from 13-18. Windsor Castle, one of Queen Elizabeth II's official residences, can be clearly seen from the school, another reminder to pupils of their rarefied surroundings. Eton does not have the best exam results in the country, and yet it seems to instill in its pupils a conviction that they will go on to great things. "There is the tradition of Eton -- we have been here for 570 years -- and the school has had within it young men who have gone on to do remarkable things in all manner of walks of life," said headmaster Tony Little. "Although we don't headline these achievements, we don't teach boys about 19 prime ministers, there is a sense that if you are part of a community in which boys have done remarkable things, why not you?" he told AFP in an interview. Although he diplomatically declines to talk about old boys, others remember Cameron as embodying all the qualities Eton claims to develop in its pupils. Journalist Pirate Irwin, a contemporary of the future prime minister in the 1980s, said: "David was always beautifully turned-out, he looked like leadership material even then. "He was extremely charming and he said all the right things," he added, recalling that in his final year, Cameron was elected by his peers into the Eton Society, known as Pop, for the 20 to 22 most popular people in that year. Others needed more encouragement. "I remember once coming last out of 18 pupils in my maths class but Mr Benham, the beak" -- Eton's name for teachers -- "still gave me the award for the best effort. "That meant a lot to me. Although I don't think David (Cameron) ever needed that sort of encouragement." An Eton education does not come cheap -- fees are 29,000 pounds (33,750 euros, 42,000 dollars) a year, although some scholarships are available and many families receive bursaries to lighten the load. That amount is "pretty similar to many other boarding schools at the top end", Little said, but he makes no apologies for its elitism. "Education is an expensive business, but one could make a good case that ignorance is even more expensive." He stresses however that the days when aristocratic families could unquestioningly count on their children getting a place at Eton are over. "The school is now completely meritocratic on entry -- each student has to prove his worth and go through our assessment process and be accepted." Yet he admits that 40 percent of pupils have a father or grandfather who attended the school. "That means that 60 percent did not and that is a good balance to have," he adds. Little describes the way the boys -- all of whom are boarders -- run their own societies, ranging from politics to wine, as being a key way of developing the self-confidence they will need later in life. Some 100 distinguished speakers visit the school every year -- organised by the pupils themselves, who also take charge of what food to serve at the speeches. "So at the age of 17 it seems to you quite normal that you should write to a cabinet minister or to a poet or to a businessman and invite him to come to your school to speak and you also rather expect them to say yes, out of curiosity, probably." However, for left-wing commentators, the ascent of Cameron to premier is a depressing reminder that "the Establishment is back". "We live in the most class-ridden society in western Europe, and it is becoming more sclerotic and more hierarchical by the year," Nick Cohen of The Observer wrote.
