Jeff Koons to give Le Mans art-car fee to charity
PARIS (AFP) - – US pop artist Jeff Koons, whose latest work is an explosively-coloured BMW M3 GT2 for this month's Le Mans 24 Hours road race, will donate his fee to charity.
In Paris to show the garish vehicle ahead of the June 12-13 race, Koons said "it is as life, full of power and energy."
Koons, one of the world's most highly-priced living artists, said his fee from the German auto firm would go to charities helping children.
"If it wins I double the fee," he said, while declining details on the amount.
His car is number 17 in a BMW series dating back to 1975 in which famous contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney, have painted BMWs ahead of Le Mans.
Whether the go-fast stripes will make the car go faster is another question. But driver Andy Priaulx said he felt its energy and added: "It is inspirational".
Koons himself does not drive a BMW. "I have a large family. I need a very large car," he said.
