ADVERTISEMENT The official IRNA news agency said six protesters went on trial, including Abdollah Momeni, a student leader. IRNA later reported that the trial judge ordered that media should not name those being tried. After the judge's order, the Fars news agency reported remarks made by one accused, referring to him only by his initials A.M., a former student activist. "I consider myself to be involved in the events that followed the election," A.M told the court, according to Fars. "Prior to the election, we were talking about issues like fraud and were also advocating massively against the officials of the regime. We also staged a rebellion against the regime... the election was just a pretext to hit at the symbol of the regime, the (supreme) leader" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Fars also said that the accused had apologised for all his wrongdoings and asked to be pardoned. Iran has already put about 140 protesters on trial for opposing the re-election of Ahmadinejad in the June 12 presidential poll, which the opposition alleges was massively rigged. Those charged include leading reformist politicians, activists and employees of the British and French embassies. The opposition has denounced what it has called a "show trial." The post-election unrest killed 36 people, according to Iranian officials, but opposition groups say 72 people died, some of them in police custody. Monday's trial comes after the authorities at the weekend freed Alireza Beheshti, a close aide to opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, and Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, a prominent lawyer who belongs to Nobel prize winner Shirin Ebadis rights group. Iranian media said Beheshti was freed on Saturday night after being arrested last Tuesday following a raid on his office, which was set up to probe alleged post-vote prisoners abuse. Dadkhah, a founder of the Human Rights Defenders Centre headed by Ebadi, was freed on Sunday after posting bail of five billion rials (500,000 dollars). He was arrested in early July amid a crackdown on critics of Ahmadinejad and opposition supporters. The opposition charged that the poll was massively rigged, sparking week-long street protests during which thousands were initially arrested. Defeated reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi has charged that several protesters were raped in custody, but the Iranian judiciary on Saturday rejected the allegations as baseless and called for action against Karroubi.
