Brij Lal, a senior police officer in the state of Uttar Pradesh, says about 55 people were on the bus and the death toll is expected to rise. Lal says a tire burst or a snapped axle caused sparks, which set the fuel tank alight. The bus was taking pilgrims home after a visit to a Hindu religious leader when the accident happened near the town of Firozabad, 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by aging vehicles, overloading and reckless driving.
