'Slava's Snowshow' brightens Broadway
By PETER SANTILLI,Associated Press Writer AP - 2 hours 43 minutes ago
NEW YORK - The Great White Way just got a fresh dusting of snow _ all the way from Russia and just in time for the holidays.
The circusy spectacle "Slava's Snowshow" is back in New York for a limited Broadway engagement, which opened Sunday at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
The show's creator and lead performer, Slava Polunin, is a Russian-born virtuoso of clowning and mime.
Dressed in an oversized yellow jumpsuit, furry shoes and a bright red sphere for a nose, the top clown stands apart from his farcical castmates _ a team of mischievous oafs in green coats with ridiculously long and floppy shoes and hats.
Slava and his merry men exude a wealth of raw expression and irresistible humor through an economy of movement and simple, nonverbal gestures.
A large part of what makes "Snowshow" so mesmerizing to both children and adults is the cast's mastery of the art of clowning. But the show's appeal is heightened by the deft way in which this art form is blended into a unique kind of musical theater.
Tasteful and imaginative application of recorded music, props and effects transform every square foot of the theater into a dreamlike, wintry fantasy _ an unmistakably original vision that oozes old-world charm.
The vision is achieved with subtle lighting and otherwise ordinary devices like falling confetti, bubbles and smoke. The overall theatrical effect is undeniably spellbinding and the result of years of tweaking.
Since its Moscow premiere in 1993, "Snowshow" has entranced audiences in more than 25 countries, including a celebrated run of more than 1,000 off-Broadway performances. That initial New York production garnered the 2005 Drama Desk Award for unique theatrical experience.
Under the direction of Victor Kramer, little is significantly different in its present incarnation, on display through Jan. 4. But that should not deter Slava enthusiasts from wanting to experience it again.
In the show's thrilling final scene, a tempestuous blizzard of sound and light is accompanied by Carl Orff's fiercely intense "Carmina Burana."
A few moments later, the squall subsides and the mood transforms. We discover we've been transported to another place altogether _ a calm after the storm. Inflated spheres float tranquilly overhead and snowlike particles flutter downward.
Slava and the other sweetly innocent clowns drift through the audience, mingling with enraptured theatergoers, who will retain the memory of this euphoric moment long after they finish plucking confetti from their clothes.
