Football: Fiery match expected between Indonesia and Singapore
Channel NewsAsia - Tuesday, December 9
SINGAPORE: Singapore is a step closer to winning a third successive ASEAN Football Federation Cup title after they secured a semi—final berth at this year’s competition, following the 3—1 win against Myanmar on Sunday night.
MediaCorp’s TODAY reporter Shamir Osman, who has been covering the Lions’ progress in Jakarta, gave his take on Monday on the drama—filled game where Myanmar’s goalkeeper Aung Aung Oo pushed the referee, and the team walked out in protest of the referee’s decision to award Singapore a quick free kick.
Shamir said: "The referee will definitely have to put the incident into his match report and it is very likely that Aung will face more than just a red card that he got last night. He will probably face a lengthy ban for what amounts to an assault on the referee.
"The Myanmar team waited on the sidelines and looked like they were refusing to go back to play. Thailand did the same last year when a penalty was awarded to Singapore in the finals and they faced only a warning. From the looks of things here, Myanmar will likely face a similar slap on the wrist."
Asked if more should be done to clamp down on such behaviour, Shamir responded: "This does not paint a very good picture of football in this region. The impression is that if the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) is unable to do something, then the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) needs to step in, if necessary, to rectify situations like this."
As for Singapore’s final group match against host Indonesia, the TODAY reporter said the atmosphere on Tuesday is likely to be fiery.
"The fans here in Indonesia don’t seem to like Singapore very much. We get booed; we get jeered each time we touch the ball. Tomorrow, at the game, it will be a fiery atmosphere.
"Both teams want to win, not just to finish top of the group, but for bragging rights. Indonesia wants revenge and Singapore wants bragging rights," he said.
