Media freedom groups and foreign diplomats, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last month, have raised concerns about the jailing of the bloggers, who were arrested after satirising the government with an Internet video that showed a donkey giving a press conference. Lawyer Isakhan Ashurov told AFP that the Supreme Court had on Thursday rejected an appeal of the November 2009 convictions of Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli on hooliganism charges. Hajizade, 27, was jailed for two years and Milli, 30, for two-and-a-half years. "We will be consulting with them and if we receive their go-ahead we will prepare documents to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights," Ashurov said. The two bloggers were arrested shortly after posting the Internet video, which lampooned the country's docile press and statements by government officials. The charges related to a scuffle in a restaurant but the bloggers and rights groups say the arrests were politically motivated. Authorities have said the charges were unrelated to the bloggers' criticism of the government. International rights groups and media-freedom organisations have repeatedly accused Azerbaijan, an oil-rich mainly Muslim republic on the Caspian Sea, of curbing free speech by jailing journalists and adopting restrictive media laws.
