The KSE authorities and the Securities and Exchange of Pakistan met on Tuesday to discuss leverage products for the market. In the meeting, it was decided to form a committee which is required to submit its recommendations within 15 working days, the SECP said. The KSE benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> rose 0.32 percent, or 31.01 points, to end at 9,682.32. The KSE-index made its intra-day high at 9,786.06 points. Volume was 83.21 million shares, compared with 66.95 million shares traded on Monday. "Since nothing substantial materialised from the meeting, volume decreased towards the later part of the day, but the market managed to close marginally up," said Asad Iqbal, chief investment officer at Faysal Asset Management Ltd. Dealers said investors were still concerned over a capital gains tax on the stock market due to be imposed July 1, dealers said. In its budget for the 2010/11 fiscal year, the government announced that a capital gains tax of 10 percent would be imposed on stocks held for six months or less and 7.5 percent on stocks held between 6 months to a year. Dealers said the government had previously agreed with the exchange that the capital gains tax would be levied only on profits made from the start of the 2010/11 fiscal year on July 1. But now there are concerns the government may seek to tax gains made before that date and demand quarterly tax returns instead of the annual filing preferred by brokers, they said. "The proposal which is before the Parliament is that a capital gains tax will be imposed on all stocks sold after July 1, whenever they've been bought," said Asif Bajwa, special secretary at the Ministry of Finance. In the currency market, the rupee <PKR=> ended firmer at 85.36/41 to the dollar, compared with 85.45/50 on Monday. In the money market, overnight rates fell 11 percent, compared to Monday's close of 11.15 percent amid increased liquidity in the interbank market. Dealers said the next scheduled inflow is on July 1 of 7.6 billion rupees. However that inflow would come in on July 2 as July 1 is a bank holiday.
