Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Africa Europe Latin America Middle East North America Finland expected to appoint second woman PM AFP - Tuesday, June 22 Send IM Story Print Finland expected to appoint second woman PM HELSINKI (AFP) - – Finland was expected to appoint its second woman prime minister Tuesday after Mari Kiviniemi was recently voted in to replace exiting premier Matti Vanhanen at the helm of the ruling Centre Party. Vanhanen, 54, who has been prime minister since 2003, tendered his resignation Friday but agreed along with his four-party, centre-right cabinet to stay on until new leadership could be appointed Tuesday afternoon. Vanhanen has blamed his surprise decision to cut short his second term on a leg operation, but a drawn-out campaign financing scandal surrounding him and his party is widely believed to have contributed to the decision. Considered a capable, knowledgeable and serious politician, Kiviniemi, 41, would likely serve as prime minister until the next parliamentary elections, scheduled for April 2011, and the Centre Party hopes her scandal-free image will help boost ratings and help it remain in power also beyond the vote. Although Kiviniemi has not been guaranteed the premiership, her rise to the head of the Centre Party makes it basically a done deal, with a vote in parliament at at 1:00 pm (1000 GMT) Tuesday followed by a presidential appointment viewed as a formality. Currently Finland's public administration and local government minister, Kiviniemi has been in parliament since 1995, but has kept a relatively low profile, and remains fairly unfamiliar to most Finns. She took up her current post in April 2007, prior to which she served as minister for foreign trade and development for six months in 2005-2006. With Finland's export-reliant economy expected this year to return to moderate growth following a massive slump last year when the global downturn dampened demand, Kiviniemi has her work cut out for her as head of government. At the weekend, she headed preliminary cabinet talks on possible adjustments to the government programme, but outlined no major policy shifts, saying only that boosting Finland's economy would be a priority. Following the scandals of recent years, commentators also expect Kiviniemi as prime minister to work to return the nation's confidence in politics. "The country yearns for political leadership," Anetro Mukka wrote in a column in leading daily Helsingin Sanomat, adding that Vanhanen's seven years as head of government had left a "confidence gap" in society. "Governance without wise, visionary politicians is like a body without a heart," Mukka said. It is likely that parliamentarian Tapani Toelli, 59, will replace Kiviniemi as municipalities minister and that no other ministerial changes will be made.
