The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 148.23 points, or 1.25 percent, to 12,040.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 21.45 points, or 1.67 percent, to 1,307.57. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 51.11 points, or 1.89 percent, to 2,751.19.
