Google launches Twitter workaround for Egypt
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> launched a special service to allow people in Egypt to send Twitter messages by dialing a phone number and leaving a voicemail, as Internet access remains cut off in the country amid anti-government protests. "Like many people we've been glued to the news unfolding in Egypt and thinking of what we could do to help people on the ground," read a post on Google's official corporate blog on Monday.
Google touts "game changer" in online art viewing
LONDON - Google aims to bring the world's great art galleries into the home with a new website that offers virtual tours using Street View technology, the ability to build private collections and ultra-high resolution images. While most big galleries have been busy making their works accessible online for years, experts told a launch at London's Tate Britain gallery on Tuesday that Google's site was looking to take the online art experience to a new level.
Infineon, ARM shine; see steady growth
FRANKFURT - German chipmaker Infineon <IFXGn.DE> and British chip designer ARM Holding <ARM.L> expect semiconductor demand to remain robust after a strong quarter, signaling stability for the notoriously volatile sector. U.S. pilots new airport scans after privacy concerns
ARLINGTON, Virginia - U.S. aviation security authorities on Tuesday unveiled a new pilot program aimed at quelling an uproar about full-body scanners used to screen air travelers -- the new software will no longer produce an image of the actual person. The Transportation Security Administration is deploying new software for scanners in three U.S. airports that will show screeners an alert on a generic male or female figure only if an anomaly is detected and highlight the spot of concern.
Intel discovers chip flaw in midst of major launch
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp <INTC.O> found a defect in one of its chips, hurting its credibility during a major product launch and at a time when demand for microprocessors in PCs is being threatened. The company said on Monday it stopped shipments of the chip used in personal computers with its most advanced Sandy Bridge line of processors and has already started production of a new version.
Google topples Nokia from smartphones top spot
HELSINKI/NEW YORK - Google Inc's <GOOG.O> Android dethroned Nokia's <NOK1V.HE> Symbian as the global leader in smartphone software during the last quarter of 2010, ending a reign that began with the birth of the industry a decade ago. The reshuffle underscores how quickly Google, which offers its software to phone makers for free, has raced to the top of the smartphone market ahead of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> rapid ascension. Google and Apple have revolutionized the smartphone market, sending Nokia scrambling.
Google says executive missing in Egypt
