India's Satyam shares up as new CEO named
AFP - Saturday, February 7
MUMBAI (AFP) - - Shares of fraud-hit IT giant Satyam Computer climbed Friday, a day after it announced a new chief executive and said it had lined up funds to help tide it over a cash crunch.
The company jumped as high as 6.81 percent or 3.15 rupees to an intraday day peak of 49.4 rupees following the appointment of company veteran A.S. Murty as chief executive officer.
The rise came despite news Friday that Murty had sold Satyam shares in the weeks leading up to the dramatic confession in January by founder and former chief executive B. Ramalinga Raju that he had fiddled the financial books.
A company spokeswoman denied Murty had committed any wrongdoing or had been aware of the billion-dollar fraud.
She said Murty sold shares "in his personal capacity" and that "no irregularities" had been found in connection with the fraud that shook corporate India.
Murty sold 40,000 shares worth nine million rupees (185,000 dollars) in December.
Satyam shares retraced on profit-taking to close up 2.49 percent or 1.15 rupees at 47.4.
The announcement of Murty's appointment came Thursday after a two-day meeting of the government-appointed board in the southern city of Hyderabad where Satyam Computer Services is based.
Murty is filling the hole created on January 7 when Raju admitted he had falsified a company bank balance of one billion dollars and inflated profits.
Murty has occupied various posts with India's fourth-largest software exporter, including overseeing global delivery.
The company board also said it had received "bank sanctions for a total sum of six billion rupees as a planned fund infusion towards working capital requirements."
"This funding, along with healthy collections (from clients), is expected to help the company tide over its financial challenges," the board said.
"News of the new chief and funding details are positive," said Hitesh Agrawal, head of research with Angel Broking.
"This is exactly the positive news" that the stock needs, he said.
Raju is being held on accusations of cheating, forgery and breach of trust.
Agrawal said Murty's appointment was a good development as he was a long-serving company employee who would be aware of global clients' needs and Satyam's internal operations.
