(AHN) - Layoffs continued across the United States Thursday on top of a report saying first time jobless claims jumped to a 26 year high last week and President Barack Obama attempted to fine tune the economic stimulus package he wants Congress to pass. Some 626,000 Americans filed first time jobless claims for the week ending Jan. 31. That was the highest number since October 1982. After eight weeks of new jobless claims exceeding 500,000 people weeekly, some economists had reportedly thought the string of high numbers was a spike that meant the recession was ending. They reportedly thought the number of people filing new jobless claims would begin going down signaling the nation was coming out of recession and had forecast that new claims would drop to 580,000 from the previous 588,000. Therefore, the latest figures of 626,000 new jobless claims caught some economists by surprise, because it signals a deepening of the recession. But the new jobless figures, unfortunately, lend credibility to the assessment by Obama, and many others, that the recession is deepening. If layoffs continue at this pace, or higher, the nation is at risk of slipping into a depression that no amount of economic stimulation is likely to end soon. The loss of 2.6 million jobs last year was the most since 1945. And some people aren't being laid off, they are having their hours cut, or can only find a part-time job after losing a full-time one. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 8 million workers belong to a group of workers who need or want to work full-time, but can only find part-time work. And that group has grown by 59 percent in a year and by 135 percent in the past decade. Problems from working only part-time aren't confined to workers who can't find a full-time job. The economy of the U.S. suffers as well, because people who are involuntarily working only part-time have less money than they need. So they shop less, save less, are more likely to lose their homes and health care and to use emergency rooms. BLS data shows that involuntary part-time workers make up 6 percent of employed people versus only 2.7 percent 10 years ago. And the layoffs continue. Here is a look at some of the latest job losses. Technology firm Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) is forecasting lower than expected earnings and announced up to 2,000 job cuts Thursday. Media and entertainment giant Time Warner announced a fourth quarter loss and said its cable unit, Time Warner Cable, had also had losses and would cut 1,250 jobs, or 2.6 percent of its work force. Boston's school system will cut at least 900 jobs, including 403 teaching positions, which is 6 percent of teachers. The school system will also explore closing addition schools. Century Aluminum Co (CENX.O) will immediately begin shutting down its Ravenswood, W.VA aluminum smelter with layoffs of most of the remaining 651 employees expected to be complete by Feb. 20, company officials cited bad market conditions. Research-based pharmaceutical company Sepracor (NASDAQ: SEPR) announceed 530 job cuts. Financial news and data firm Bloomberg LP announced the first job cuts in the company's 28-year history. Bloomberg will lay off 100 employees in its radio and television divisions. That represents 1 percent of the company's 10,000 employees and most of the cuts will be among employees based in New York City. The cuts are part of a reorganization to prevent overlapping coverage. Layoffs of hundreds or thousands of workers at well-known companies grabs headlines, but losses of jobs at smaller companies, or entities also contribute to large numbers of new jobless claims every week. Among those less well known layoffs were the 75 people who lost their jobs Wednesday at the Ashland Auto Group, formerly known as Sym Fryson's dealership, in Ashland, KY. Some of those who lost their jobs had been with the company as long as 18 years. The dealership blamed the ailing economy. Macomb County, MI, commissioners announced the layoffs of up to 17 county employees, wih a second round of layoffs expected later in the year to bring total layoffs of up to 200 because of government budget shortfalls now standing at $18 million. Macomb County wasn't alone. Butler County, OH, commissioners also announced job cuts on Thursday. A budget shortfall means 63 jobs will be cut, along with all part-time positions and some county employees will have their wages cut as well.
