* Kiwi off highs after Australia's rate rise
* NZ dlr seen likely to regain lost ground vs Aussie
* NZ dollar to move with broader market events
WELLINGTON, March 2 - The New Zealand dollar retreated on Tuesday as it followed the Australian dollar lower after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised interest rates but sounded less hawkish about the outlook than some had expected.
The kiwi <NZD=D4> traded around $0.6965/68 at 0400 GMT, down from $0.6885/88 late on Monday, having spent much of the local session around $0.6990/00.
It had been largely on the sidelines before the RBA's move to raise its cash rate by 25 basis points to 4 percent amid improving growth and inflation close to its target. [ID:nSGE62101U]
The kiwi tracked the Aussie <AUD=> in the wake of the rate decision, initially moving higher, then lower as the RBA's tone turned out to be more neutral than many had figured.
"Taking some of the hawkish language out of the statement has seen the Aussie come off a little bit and dragged the kiwi lower," said BNZ currency strategist Mike Jones.
"I think the RBA is really signalling that it's back to data watching...it's not really taking anything for granted," said Jones.
The kiwi was a touch lower on the cross rate against the Aussie <NZDAUD=R> but did not revisit the 10-month low of last week, and Jones said the yield gap between the two economies might not prove to be as large as previously thought.
"The kiwi may play a bit of catch-up to the Aussie so we may see the cross rate increase from here, in fact we've probably seen the bottom today," he said.
The kiwi last traded at around A$0.7750 after briefly touching a low of A$0.7730.
The RBA was the key event for the kiwi, which will continue to be driven by broader market events this week, including central bank meetings in Canada, Britain and the euro zone, and U.S. employment data at the end of the week.
The Reserve Bank of NZ holds its next meeting on March 11, with analysts expecting rates to be held at a record low of 2.5 percent and a repeat of previous statements to hold it there at least until the middle of the year. [NZ/POLL]
The kiwi remained firm against sterling <NZDGBP=R> after it had hit a 25 year high the previous day on the growing risk that there might be a hung parliament.
New Zealand government debt was largely flat with the yield on the benchmark NZ 10-year bond <NZ10YT=RR> steady at 5.76 percent.
