Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Asia Pacific World US-ENTERTAINMENT Summary Reuters - Tuesday, March 2 Send IM Story Print NBC gets silver for Olympics, Seinfeld no medal LOS ANGELES - The Vancouver Winter Olympics proved a ratings triumph for beleaguered NBC, but popular comedian Jerry Seinfeld's new show stumbled with critics as the U.S. television network returned to regular programing. NBC said on Monday that 190 million Americans watched the Vancouver Olympics on its stations and cable outlets over 17 days, making them the second-most-watched Winter games since Lillehammer in 1994. "The Pacific" a realistic view of American combat LOS ANGELES - Having created "Band of Brothers," the masterful 2001 miniseries that followed Easy Company from its training in Georgia through the D-Day invasion and until the end of the war, executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg now balance the equation with a project set in the Pacific theater. The result is "The Pacific," premiering March 14, also 10 parts but in some ways as different in its approach to the material as the jungle warfare of the Pacific was from the more conventional fighting in Europe. Both miniseries are infused with raw, powerful stories of personal triumph and adversity, but "Pacific" feels more random and more contained. Each episode is so completely built on discrete incidents that a strong case can be made for calling this a limited series. "Crazies" remake influenced by post-9/11 world LOS ANGELES - "The Crazies," a remake of George Romero's 1973 horror movie, opened at No. 3 at the weekend box office in North America with better-than-expected sales of $16.1 million, according to final data issued on Monday. The story of a small town where a toxin causes the residents to become insanely psychopathic and the army comes in to contain the epidemic also received a surprising amount of positive reviews. Final "Shrek" movie to open Tribeca Film Fest NEW YORK - The world's most famous ogre, Shrek, his princess, and motley crew of friends will open the Tribeca Film Festival next month, with the final chapter of the successful series making its world premiere in 3-D in New York. "Shrek Forever After," the fourth installment of DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.'s series and the first in 3-D, will screen on Tribeca's opening night, April 21. The festival, one of the most prominent in the United States, will run until May 2. David Bowie's new makeover: Rock 'n' roll recluse LOS ANGELES - David Bowie is spending his Golden Years in anonymity. The 63-year-old rock icon last released a new album in 2003, and stopped touring in 2004 after suffering a heart attack during a European trek. The early Internet enthusiast has not even updated his official blog since October 2006, when he proudly revealed he would voice a character on the kids cartoon show "SpongeBob SquarePants." TV's "Parenthood" revisits family life, 20 years on LOS ANGELES - More than two decades after Oscar-winning director Ron Howard's family inspired his hit movie "Parenthood", a new generation of writers is bringing the joys, trials and humor of family life to television. The TV series "Parenthood", featuring four grown siblings in the colorful Braverman family, their children and their parents, makes its much-anticipated debut on March 2 on NBC. It is a centerpiece of struggling NBC's efforts to revive scripted dramas and lure prime-time viewers after the embarrassing failure of its talk program "The Jay Leno Show" at 10pm. Wall Street is alive with the sound of ... Chopin? NEW YORK - Wall Street might not seem like the obvious location for a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of romantic composer Frederic Chopin, but it's the venue this week for 200 hours of Chopin performances by an eclectic line-up of pianists. As they take a break from their workday, Wall Street traders and office workers can join the global celebration of Chopin's birthday and take stock of the vast and beloved repertoire of Poland's most illustrious composer. TLC dumps Miss America franchise LOS ANGELES - Miss America is single again. Cable channel TLC is jettisoning the 89-year-old franchise after three years despite strong ratings, which means the beauty pageant again will have to hustle to find a network. "Shutter Island" still captivates moviegoers LOS ANGELES - Martin Scorsese's suspense thriller "Shutter Island" led the North American box office for a second consecutive weekend on Sunday, while "Avatar" was the top choice internationally for an 11th weekend. A pair of newcomers, the comedy "Cop Out" and horror remake "The Crazies," outperformed expectations to join "Shutter Island" on the podium. "Office" worker Robinson to host "Last Comic" LOS ANGELES - "The Office" co-star Craig Robinson will host the return of NBC's "Last Comic Standing" this summer. Robinson, who plays warehouse boss Darryl on "The Office," will be the latest personality to host the show, which has been previously emceed by Jay Mohr, Anthony Clark and Bill Bellamy.
