MARKET SNAPSHOTS * In the currency market, the rupee weakened to 84.15/18 to the dollar on Friday compared with Thursday's close of 83.82/92, because of higher demand for dollars for import payments, dealers said. [PKR/] * The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index <.KSE> fell 0.08 percent, or 8.12 points, to end at 10,607.03. Volume was 153.86 million shares compared with 185.71 million traded on Thursday. [.KA] * The net inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the stock market was $4.85 million on Friday.. [http://www.nccpl.com.pk/fipi-new/index.php] * U.S. stocks rose to a 19-month high on Friday as Merck eased concerns about the impact of healthcare reform, saying its costs will be relatively low. Energy shares lifted the broad market after oil <CLc1> rose 1.7 percent to above $85 a barrel on positive economic data. The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 69.99 points, or 0.63 percent, to 11,204.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 8.61 points, or 0.71 percent, to 1,217.28. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> added 11.08 points, or 0.44 percent, to 2,530.15. [.N] * U.S. crude futures rose above $85 a barrel on Monday, adding to gains from the previous session when strong U.S. economic statistics raised new hopes that the economic recovery was on course. NYMEX crude for June delivery <CLc1> was up 25 cents at $85.37 a barrel by 0036 GMT, after settling up $1.42 on Friday, when a sharp jump in U.S. new home sales signalled a stronger economic recovery and boosted the outlook for energy demand. [O/R] * Gold hit one-week highs on Monday while euro-denominated gold prices briefly hit an all-time high in early Asian trade as Greece's debt woes highlighted bullion's appeal as a safe haven. Spot gold <XAU=> inched up 0.2 percent to $1,158.50 per ounce as of 0213 GMT, after hitting a one-week high of 1,159.73 per ounce earlier. It was at $1,155.90 per ounce in New York late on Friday.
