"Dragon" proves tough to slay at box office
LOS ANGELES - "How to Train Your Dragon" proved a difficult film to slay at the North American box office as it took the top spot in its fifth weekend in theaters, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. The animated "Dragon" earned $15 million over the weekend since Friday, dropping just 23 percent since last weekend.
Polanski lawyer says U.S. wants him "in shackles"
PARIS - Roman Polanski's lawyer accused U.S. courts Saturday of wanting to see the filmmaker "in shackles" after they rejected his bid to be sentenced in absentia for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Polanski skipped bail and fled the United States for France in 1978, and is now fighting extradition from Switzerland. Affirming the decision of a Los Angeles judge in January, a state appeals court ruled Thursday that the 76-year-old filmmaker must return to California before he can be sentenced.
Tribeca film explores al Qaeda's history and culture
NEW YORK - A new film by Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney takes viewers from Cairo to London on a search for the cultural and historical roots of al Qaeda and some of its motives behind its attack on the United States. "My Trip to Al-Qaeda," which debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, follows U.S. journalist Lawrence Wright's worldwide exploration of the historical context of what formed and radicalized al Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden.
Despite scary reviews, "Addams Family" lures label
NEW YORK - The new Broadway musical "The Addams Family" opened April 8 to gruesome reviews. But the box-office receipts have turned out to be surprisingly robust, leaving the production's parade of investors snap-snapping their way to the bank. Among them is a conspicuous newcomer to the field.
Deftones return after bassist sidelined by injury
LOS ANGELES - Despite a car accident in November 2008 that left bassist Chi Cheng with a debilitating brain injury, the Deftones have returned with a new album. The set moves away from the experimental nature of the California rock band's past three studio efforts and revisits the raw heaviness of its mid-'90s releases. The decision to carry on was difficult, but Deftones singer Chino Moreno says the tragedy has brought the group closer together.
YouTube fame yields record deal for R&B rookie
LOS ANGELES - Singer/songwriter Dondria thought someone was pulling a fast one when she began receiving e-mail messages on her YouTube and MySpace sites from someone calling himself Jermaine Dupri. So she ignored them. But the sender persisted until Dondria decided to take a chance and call. The record label executive flew Dondria and her manager-mother, Cynthia McCarty, to Atlanta for a meeting.
Indie rockers the National confront hype, stardom
NEW YORK - For a band that's considered to be one of the leaders of Brooklyn's indie-rock enclave, the National has a fairly conflicted relationship with New York. Frontman Matt Berninger laments about the "Manhattan valleys of the dead" in the song "Anyone's Ghost" from the band's forthcoming album "High Violet."
LCD Soundsystem raises glass to "Drunk Girls"
NEW YORK - Just days after LCD Soundsystem's new single, "Drunk Girls," leaked online, a companion video of sorts hit YouTube. As the first taste of the band's third album, the song had already set tongues wagging, from Pitchfork awarding it a "Best New Music" tag to Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield hailing it as an early contender for single of the year.
Gospel singer Clark-Sheard on road with new album
NASHVILLE - "Touring" carries a different meaning for singer Karen Clark-Sheard these days. The gospel icon is on the road in the hit play "Church Girl" while promoting her fifth album, "All in One," which was released April 6. It marks Clark-Sheard's first solo project in four years and her first album on her own EMI Gospel-distributed label, Karew Records.
Filipina songbird Charice set to release U.S. debut
NEW YORK is preparing for the May 11 release of her U.S. album debut on Foster's 143 Records imprint at Reprise Records.
