Hatoyama's cabinet's disapproval rate increased to 68 percent from 57 percent last month, while his support dropped to 24 percent from 36 percent, according to the weekend poll by the Nikkei business daily and TV Tokyo. The poll was released a day after 90,000 people rallied on the southern island of Okinawa to demand that the centre-left government defy Washington's wishes and move an unpopular US airbase off the island. The row has festered for months and criticism has grown of Hatoyama for failing so far to come up with a viable alternative site for the base as the clock ticks toward his self-imposed May 31 deadline to resolve the issue. The Nikkei said Hatoyama's poll ratings are "approaching critical levels for maintaining power ahead of upper house elections this summer" after the survey of 1,477 eligible voters, 62 percent of whom gave valid responses. Fifty-seven percent said Hatoyama should resign if he fails to resolve the issue of relocating the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, which locals oppose, mainly because of aircraft noise and the threat of accidents. The site is now located in a crowded urban area of Okinawa and, under a 2006 pact with Washington that is now under review, had been due for relocation to a quieter coastal stretch, where locals also oppose it. Hatoyama told reporters in Tokyo on Monday that the mass rally on Sunday reflected the "people's will" and pledged that he "would like to further reduce the burden on Okinawa. I will continue making efforts." Hatoyama, whose party took power in September after a landslide election win, has said he will review the 2006 deal and move Futenma off Okinawa, but a search for alternative locations has provoked more local protests. The poll also showed that support for Hatoyama's Democratic Party of Japan dropped to 27 percent from 33 percent in March, compared with 21 percent for the main opposition conservative Liberal Democratic Party.
