ADVERTISEMENT According to studio estimates, the film sold $23.4 million worth of tickets in the three days since opening July 31 across the United States and Canada. The performance marks a rare stumble for its director, Judd Apatow, as well as the latest summer disappointment for its distributor, Universal Pictures. It also marks the year's lowest opening tally for a No. 1 movie, behind several films that opened in the $24 million range. Universal, a unit of General Electric Co, recently released the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "Bruno," which quickly lost steam at the box office, and the Johnny Depp gangster drama "Public Enemies," which failed to hit $100 million. It ranks last among the big six studios in market share this year, according to Box Office Mojo . Apatow's directing debut, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," opened to $21 million in 2005 on its way to $109 million while his 2007 follow-up, "Knocked Up," earned $31 million in its first weekend, and finished with $149 million. Sandler's previous worst opening for a wide release movie was the comedy "Spanglish," which started off with $8.8 million in December 2004. Industry forecasts for "Funny People" had ranged between the low-$20 million to the mid-$30 million area, according to trade paper Daily Variety. The range was so great in part because the lengthy movie is not the usual low-brow fare that works so well for Sandler. He plays a comedian diagnosed with a fatal blood disease who then tries to break up a marriage. Apatow regulars Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill co-star, along with Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann. Rapper Eminem has a cameo. Top critics disliked the movie, although the wider critical community liked it, according to Rotten Tomatoes , a website that analyzes reviews.
