As Indonesians cut back on chili, mouths suffer

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - Imagine life for Koreans without kimchi, Americans without apple pie or Mexicans without tortillas. That is how it has felt for a large number of people in Jakarta over the past few weeks.
The escalating price of chili, which the government had blamed on bad weather, has forced Jakartans to cut back on chili consumption with sambal (ground chili) and fresh chili disappearing from dinner tables, food stalls and vendors.
The chili shortage hit lovers of fried snacks particularly hard.
"Yesterday, I bought 10 gorengan [fried snacks] and the vendors only gave me three pieces of chili, tiny ones," office worker Rachmadin Ismail told The Jakarta Post.
On a good day, fried-snack vendors are generous in handing out fresh chilies as a complement.
With the price of chili now hovering between Rp 80,000 (US$9) and Rp 100,000 per kilogram, it is not considered a good idea for fried-snack vendors to give away chili to customers.
"My mother has not consumed sambal for one week," Rachmadin said. "This is difficult both for her and me as we always feel that something is missing when eating without it."
Experts have said that chili increases salivation, which is good for people whose diet is based on bland staples such as corn or rice, hence the popularity of chili here and jalapenos in Mexico.
Fortunately for Rachmadin, he can still eat as much sambal as he wants. The food joint that he regularly frequents decided not to cut back on chili as it feared it would drive away patrons.
However, not many food vendors are as generous as Rachmadin's favorite haunt.
Another sambal lover, Adisya Nuzulita, said that the food at her favorite restaurants had dulled although it still contained chili.
"The taste is less spicy, because they put more tomatoes in it," she said.
She encounters the same thing when dealing with fried-snacks and meatball soup (bakso).
"Can you imagine, the vendor only gave me five pieces of chili for 10 fried snacks," she said.
Adisya also noticed that one meatball-soup shop in Kota, West Jakarta, had increased the price of the soup by Rp 500 per portion.
Another chili lover, Nurulia Juwita, was warned even before food came to her table at a canteen in her office. "While serving my table the waiter said, 'Don't say anything about the sambal, the chili price is so expensive'."
She experienced the chili shortage first hand when she purchased the spice. "I was shocked to see that a handful of chili that usually costs me only Rp 2,000 now costs Rp 5,000," she said.
Some food vendors adjust to the situation by charging what was once a free item.
A vendor of grilled chicken at Cikini Train Station, Yahya, said that she now charged Rp 2,000 for every additional portion of sambal.
"Most of my customers don't mind because they know how high the chili price is now," he said.
He added that the price of chili had begun to increase from Christmas and reached its peak a few days ago at Rp 100,000 per kilogram.
