Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Weekend Edition US-TECH Summary Reuters - 1 hour 9 minutes ago Send IM Story Print A sea of tablets at CES, but no iPad-killer LAS VEGAS - It was easier to find a tablet this week in Las Vegas than a taxi. Rivals determined to prevent Apple Inc <AAPL.O> from dominating the tablet market the way it did with digital music players unleashed a tidal wave of touchscreen devices at the Consumer Electronics Show. Amazon cloud can help hack WiFi networks: expert BOSTON - A security researcher says he has figured out a quick and inexpensive way to break a commonly used form of password protection for wireless networks using powerful computers that anybody can lease from Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> over the Web. Thomas Roth, a computer security consultant based in Cologne, Germany, says he can hack into protected networks using specialized software that he has written that runs on Amazon's cloud-based computers. It tests 400,000 potential passwords per second using Amazon's high-speed computers. ARM says Microsoft needs it for mobile LAS VEGAS - Microsoft's <MSFT.O> plan to make Windows compatible with ARM Holdings <ARM.L> chip designs will help the software giant establish a major presence in smartphones and tablets, ARM's president said. Microsoft has been slow to make a splash in the mobile market, dominated by Apple <AAPL.O>, Google <GOOG.O> and Research In Motion <RIM.TO>, but it's not too late, Tudor Brown told Reuters in an interview. Sony aims for No. 2 spot in tablet devices LAS VEGAS - Sony Corp aims to slide in behind Apple Inc as the world's second-largest maker of tablet devices by 2012, a senior executive said on Thursday, adding that a PlayStation phone was also a potential opportunity. Separately, Sony CEO Howard Stringer denied he was a candidate for the chairmanship of the BBC, after a media report said last month he had been approached about the post. Microsoft reviewing prize media account: source NEW YORK - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> has put its estimated $1 billion media buying account into review, raising the possibility the business could move to an agency other than current partner Universal McCann, according to a source familiar with the account. Universal McCann is a division of advertising holding company Interpublic Group <IPG.N> and is a major player on Madison Avenue, with blue-chip clients including Exxon Mobil <XOM.N>, Johnson & Johnson <JNJ.N>, and Sony Corp <6758.T>. Facebook documents reveal strong profits: source NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook is generating profits at a faster-than-expected rate, and will likely attract so many investors this year that it will have to disclose financial data similar to a publicly traded company by April 2012, according to a document distributed by Goldman Sachs <GS.N>. The move could set the stage for a much-anticipated Facebook initial public offering in 2012, though there is no guarantee that the social networking company would choose to sell shares to the public simply because it is required to open its books to the public. Verizon CEO ponders shift to use-based mobile plan LAS VEGAS - Verizon Wireless is experiencing a boost in higher-margin wireless data subscribers thanks to a $10 limited data service it is offering, potentially encouraging the top U.S. operator to make such an offer more permanent. While rival AT&T Inc <T.N> had eliminated unlimited data services and been selling useage-based data pricing plans to smartphone customers for months, Verizon Wireless has yet to follow suit. Local.com says Yahoo's Bing deal hurts revenue BANGALORE than what Yahoo had paid prior to the integration of its search engine with Microsoft, the company said in a statement. Toshiba year-end TV sales strong but 3D weak LAS VEGAS - Japan's Toshiba Corp <6502.T> saw better-than-expected television sales in November and December thanks to a spike in Japanese sales, the head of the company's TV unit told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. But Masaaki Osumi said sales of 3D models designed for use with special glasses had disappointed, accounting for only about 15-20 percent of large TVs sold, compared with an initial target of 50 percent. LG eyes 4-fold jump in 2011 smartphone sales LAS VEGAS - South Korea's LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS> aims to more than quadruple smartphone shipments this year and will focus on expanding premium products to catch up with bigger rivals, an executive said on Thursday. LG is the world's No.3 handset maker but the business is struggling with record losses and has lost out to Apple <AAPL.O> due to weak lineups and a rise in development and marketing costs to prop up faltering sales of low-priced phones.
