MUMBAI (AFP) - – Tata Elxsi, part of the giant Tata Group, has announced a planned tie-up with a Los Angeles-based children's entertainment company, in the latest foray by an Indian firm into Hollywood. The animated and visual effects firm said on its website Thursday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with A Squared Entertainment for a joint venture to create original animation and digital gaming. No details about the cost of the deal were given and a Tata Elxsi spokesman told AFP on Friday that he was not authorised to comment on the details. But the Los Angeles Times newspaper said on its website that Tata Elxsi had bought a 51 percent stake in A Squared. The Indian company, based in the southern city of Bangalore, would finance productions and provide the workforce, while A Squared would manage the creative direction of projects through its Hollywood contacts, the Times added. Tata Elxsi chief executive and managing director Madhukar Dev said in the statement that the tie-up would "combine the best of creative and marketing skills from Hollywood and the animation production experience". The co-president of A Squared, Andy Heyward, added that the deal would give them a "tremendous advantage in today's competitive children's marketplace". Tata Elxsi's foray into the US entertainment market is the latest by an Indian company. In July 2009, Reliance Big Entertainment signed an 825-million-dollar deal with Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios to make half a dozen films every year. Tata Elxsi's Visual Computing Labs worked on the 2008 film "Roadside Romeo" -- a tie-up between Yash Raj Films and Disney, which was the US studio giant's first feature-length animation using Indian actors. A Squared has created programmes such as "Secret Millionaire's Club" in which the billionaire Warren Buffet tutors children about finance. It has also produced children's series with animated versions of the supermodel Gisele Bundchen, the entrepreneur Martha Stewart and the comic book artist Stan Lee.
