The Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> ended down 0.43 percent at 2,106.66 points, weighed by foreign selling which amounted to 147.3 billion won . "The market is taking a rest after posting a series of record highs. Caution is also setting in before key quarterly results this week and next," said SK Securities market analyst Won Jong-hyuck. Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, the world's No.1 memory chip maker, fell 1.3 percent after hitting a record high in the previous session. But fund managers said the shares still offered attractive valuations and up to 20 percent upside room this year. "Its shares are still cheap both technically and fundamentally. And its hitting a historical high reaffirms the market's confidence about the firm," said Kim Young-chan, a fund manager at Shinhan-BNP Paribas Asset Management. "Due to portfolio allocation guidelines, some investment managers cannot buy more of Samsung Electronics shares even if they want to. But I definitely see buying appetite even at the current share price," Kim said. He noted that Samsung shares offered a "rare" combination of earnings stability thanks to its diverse array of successful product portfolio. Samsung Electronics shares still trade at around a 10 percent discount to its long 5-year average forward price earnings multiple, StarMine data showed. LG Display Co Ltd <034220.KS>, the world's No.2 flat panel maker, lost 1.6 percent. Falls in banks, after their U.S. peers struggled on the back of disappointing earnings, also pressured the market. KB Financial Group <105560.KS>, holding company of South Korea's No.1 commercial lender Kookmin Bank, ended 1.3 percent down. Shinhan Financial Group <055550.KS> lost 1.9 percent. OCI Co <010060.KS> rose 1 percent, lifted by strong earnings and after the polysilicon maker said it bought a majority stake in U.S. solar energy developer CornerStone Power Development. It has purchased 76 percent of CornerStone at an undisclosed price. Local media reports cited prices around $36.1 million. OCI said late on Wednesday that it saw an operating profit of about 716.7 billion won during the fiscal year 2010, up 33.2 percent from 2009. Hyundai Steel Co <004020.KS> outperformed, ending flat, amid a solid fourth-quarter earnings outlook. "Sales of its reinforcement bar have been very strong," said HI Investment & Securities analyst Chung Ji-yun, adding that South Korea's No.2 steelmaker was expected to see positive earnings momentum continue into the first quarter of this year. StarMine data showed that of 34 analyst recommendations, 12 had a "strong buy" rating on the firm, while 19 had a "buy" rating. Korea Express Co Ltd <000120.KS> continued to gain, ending up 1.3 percent amid reports that parent Kumho Asiana Group had received approval from creditors for the sale of a stake and was expected to pick a sale manager by next week. Trading volume for Korea Express was heavy, nearly 5 times its 30-day average volume, Reuters data showed. Shipping companies dropped after a fall in the Baltic Dry Index <.BADI>, which tracks the cost of shipping key commodities. Hanjin Shipping <117930.KS> shed 3.8 percent and Hyundai Merchant Marine <011200.KS> lost 1.4 percent. The KOSPI 200 March futures <KSc1> index fell 1.4 points to 278.35 points. The KOSPI 200 spot index <.KS200> lost 1.5 points to 277.75. The junior Kosdaq index <.KQ11> rose 0.07 percent to 533.36.
