Buddhists: Police, mob force monks from monastery

HANOI, Vietnam – Followers of a world-famous Buddhist teacher say Vietnamese police and an angry mob have forced 150 monks from a monastery in Vietnam's Central Highlands that has been the center of a monthslong standoff.
The Buddhists say an angry mob descended on the site Sunday morning, smashing windows and knocking down doors in an effort to evict followers of Thich Nhat Hanh, an exiled Vietnam-born monk who has sold more than 1 million books in the West and now lives in southern France.
About 230 nuns remained hunkered down inside a dormitory and a courtyard at the Bat Nha monastery in Lam Dong province on Sunday night, said Brother Trung Hai, a close associate of Nhat Hanh's, speaking from the Zen Master's Plum Village monastery in France.
Hai said the mob, which apparently included undercover police, forced about 150 monks from their rooms, beating some of them with sticks. They were herded onto buses, which transported them away from the scene, Hai said.
"We want all the violence to stop," Hai said. "We want to find a peaceful solution."
Hai said he had been communicating with the monks by telephone and e-mail.
Police and local officials did not respond to requests for comment.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, who was visiting Vietnam on Sunday, said during a press briefing that he had been informed about the conflict and "expressed our concern" to Vietnamese authorities.
"We look forward to getting more information from them about the situation," Steinberg said.
Hai said about 50 of the monks had returned to the gates of Bat Nha on Sunday evening, hoping to get back inside. Another 30 were inside the monastery gate, surrounded by police, he said.
Vietnam's communist government, which closely monitors religious affairs, has been trying to remove the monks from Bat Nha for several months.
Authorities say the Buddhists have ignored requests to leave from the monk's abbot, Duc Nghi, a member of the official Buddhist Church of Vietnam who invited Nhat Hanh's followers to settle at the pagoda in 2005 but changed his mind last year. The authorities describe the standoff as a conflict between two Buddhist factions.
But Nhat Hanh's followers believe the government is cracking down on them because their teacher has called on the communist government to end its control of religion and disband its religious police.
The dispute at Bat Nha represents a remarkable turnaround from four years ago, when France-based Nhat Hanh returned to his native land after 39 years of exile. His return made the front pages of state-owned newspapers, and authorities originally approved of his group's activities.
But during a subsequent visit in 2007, he suggested to President Nguyen Minh Triet that Vietnam's government give up its control of religion. After that, Nhat Hanh's followers say, tensions began to develop.
