New York, NY, United States (AHN) - A 2-year-old girl is alive today after her father jumped into New York’s East River and rescued her with help from a French onlooker, according to authorities.

According to one onlooker who shot video of the rescue, California resident David Anderson and his daughter Bridgette Sheriden were touring the Peking ship Saturday when the little girl slipped between the railing along the gangplank and fell 20 feet into the frigid river. Anderson, without thought, scurried over a fence and dived into the water after her. An unidentified man from France jumped in and helped both of them to safety.

The 2-year-old was taken to a hospital for examination, and released a few hours later, according reports.

Brigette’s mother – who withheld her identity – expressed gratitude towards the Frenchman for his assistance in the rescue. The unidentified man left the scene shortly after the father and daughter were safe.
