Ukrainian-born pilot Lt. Steven Zilberman, 31, was declared dead and the rescue mission to find him was called of Saturday, reports stated. He was a Columbus, Ohio, resident. According to military personnel, Zilberman’s E-2C Hawkeye surveillance plane was on its way back to the Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier when it went down less than 10 miles from the ship due to mechanical problems. Three other crew members on the aircraft were able to escape and were rescued. The Navy and Air Force covered nearly 5,500 square miles of ocean searching for the missing pilot, reports stated. Capt. Roy Kelley, commander of the carrier air wing stated the military is grieving the loss of a fellow shipmate, and expressed condolences to the Zilberman’s family. A service for Zilberman is scheduled for Thursday in Norfolk, Virginia, where the Eisenhower and air wing are stationed.
