ADVERTISEMENT In a rare concession in the Khodorkovsky saga, another court ordered the release of a Yukos lawyer, mother-of-three Svetlana Bakhmina, after former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and others rallied in her support. Prosecutors in the Khodorkovsky trial completed eight days of reading the charges against the ex-head of what was the country's largest oil company, Yukos, and his co-defendant Platon Lebedev. Asked how he pleaded in relation to four main charges, Khodorkovsky, who stood in a bullet-proof glass cubicle dressed in casual clothes, his hair close-cropped, answered: "I plead not guilty." He went on to denounce the charges that he and Lebedev embezzled a massive quantity of Yukos' oil prodcuction, worth around 25 billion dollars, between 1998 and 2004 and that they laundered proceeds amounting to 14 billion dollars in Russian currency and 7.5 billion dollars in hard currency. "The state received 40 billion dollars in taxes from Yukos yet if this oil was stolen, how could Yukos have paid these taxes? Hand us back our taxes!... The oil could not have been stolen in this way," said Khodorkovsky. He called charges that Yukos had artificially fixed its prices "appalling and stupid." His co-defendant and former business partner Lebedev was equally scathing. "This is not an accusation but a schizophrenic fraud.... I have never stolen anything nor raided anything in my life, either individually or in a group. To confess to a crime that has not taken place is ridiculous," said Lebedev. Khodorkovsky -- who was once Russia's richest man, -- was already convicted and condemned to eight years in jail on fraud and tax evasion charges but is undergoing a new trial for embezzlement. His supporters have condemned the trial as politically motivated, aimed at keeping the 45-year-old critic of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin out of the political scene indefinitely. President Dmitry Medvedev has declined to intervene, while insisting on the independence of the courts and promising to improve legal standards in Russia. In a separate development a court in Moscow ordered the release on parole of Yukos lawyer Svetlana Bakhmina, whose detention while pregnant stirred outcry among human rights groups. Bakhmina was arrested in December 2004 and convicted in April 2006 as part of a broader legal campaign by Russian authorities against Yukos. She gave birth to a third child, a girl, in December after being transferred to a detention centre near Moscow from a camp in the prison region of Mordovia. Over 95,000 people had signed an online petition seeking her release, which has won support from such prominent figures as Gorbachev. "The court, having listened to the opinion of the defence, the prosecutor and representatives of the prison service, considers it permissible to grant the parole request," said Judge Irina Vyrysheva, quoted by RIA-Novosti. Defence lawyers say that in a worst-case scenario Khodorkovsky could face an additional 22 years in jail.
