Washington, D.C. (AHN) - President Barack Obama will meet with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the global economy and a coordinated strategy in Afghanistan.Brown is also set to address a joint meeting of U.S. Congress on Wednesday.
Obama is scheduled to meet with Brown at 11:30 am ET in the Oval Office. The two leaders will have a working lunch in the Old Family Dining Room of the White House at noon. Their discussions will focus on the global financial crisis, a G20 summit Brown will be hosting in April and Afghanistan.
White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said in a press briefing on Monday, "The President said in September that we have to act together in helping to stimulate the economies of the G20, as well as ensuring that there's some financial rules of the road so that we don't find ourselves in the same position a few years down the line. Those are the topics that are likely to dominate both the meeting and the working lunch that they'll have."
Brown will be hosting leaders from the Group of 20 on April 2 for an economic summit. The G20 includes the world's seven most industrialized nations and other nations such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. The summit aims to reach international agreement on how to revive the global economy and to reform financial sectors.
The United Kingdom has the second largest force in the NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, where there are currently 38,000 American troops and about 19,000 troops from 42 other nations.
Obama has ordered the deployment of 15,000 more troops to the war-torn nation, where insurgent violence has risen. An additional 5,000 soldiers and Marines will also be sent as enabler forces. The United States is currently conducting a 60-day review of strategy in Afghanistan ahead of NATO's summit in April to mark the 60th anniversary of the alliance's founding.
Tuesday's White House meeting comes a day before Brown gives his first address to the U.S. Congress. The Prime Minister last visited the Capitol in July 2007.
Other British prime ministers who have addressed Congress include Tony Blair, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.
