Advertisement Analysis: Where does Cheick Kongo's epic comeback win rank in UFC history? Cheick Kongo had an epic comeback from the precipice Sunday night. But where does it rank among the UFC's best ever comebacks? AHN goes to the history books to rank the UFC's best returns from the dead and finds it belongs among the top three of its kind. Source: (AHN Sports) Reporter: Shawn Krest Location: Pittsburgh, PA, United States Published: June 27, 2011 04:48 pm EDT Topics: Sports, Mixed Martial Arts Cheick Kongo’s amazing comeback Sunday night inspired UFC commentator Joe Rogan to proclaim it “one of the greatest comebacks in UFC history,“ during the post-fight interview. Kongo’s return from the dead certainly ranks on the short list, but before dubbing it the best comeback in the last 2000 years, it’s worth taking an analytical look at where it should stand. There are several components to a great comeback. Obviously, the most important factor is how close the eventual winner was to losing the fight. Royce Gracie’s submission of Dan Severn from UFC 4 was an impressive comeback, but fights had no time limit back then. Gracie was just holding Severn in guard waiting for the opportunity to catch him in a submission. He wasn’t close to the precipice at the time of the stoppage, just biding his time. Similarly, Scott Smith was hurt just before his knockout of Pete Sell at the finale of TUF 4. He crumpled over in pain following a Sell body shot, but Smith was merely in trouble, not on the brink of losing. A second factor is how quickly the winning fighter turns around his fortunes. We’re looking for someone who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Surviving an onslaught isn’t enough. That eliminates Frankie Edgar’s recovery from a first round beating at the hands of Gray Maynard at UFC 125. He survived the round and eventually earned a draw. An impressive performance to be sure, but not an elite comeback. The third factor is a controversial one but important nonetheless: The significance of the fight. A title fight in a pay per view main event is a bigger stage than a prelim on a smaller card. It doesn’t make the comeback better, but it’s a lens through which to view the comeback. Scott Norwood didn’t make the worst kick in NFL history, he just missed it when the Super Bowl was on the line. Closely related to that are the storylines and personalities associated with the fight. Legends are intended to be retold, and a legendary comeback needs a compelling “once upon a time” to go with the in-cage action. Andre Roberts’ knockout of Ron Waterman at UFC 21 was fun to watch, but it was a preliminary fight between two fighters who combined for two more UFC fights in their careers. So given those four factors, where does Kongo-Barry measure up? Clearly, you can’t be in more trouble than this fighter was. Any closer to a loss and he’d need a rematch in order to come back. He appeared to be out on two occasions. Once, the referee appeared to be separating the fighters to stop the bout. On another occasion, Rogan and Mike Goldberg declared him out and the fight over. Kongo was, by any measurement, a dead man walking. The fight also scores well on the second factor. Barry was moving in for the kill and two punches later, he was receiving medical attention. The fight loses points on the final two measures, unfortunately. Kongo-Barry was a main event for less than a day and a half, and only then because both fighters managed to make it to weigh-ins. Plus, a top fight on a free-tv card doesn’t have the same cache as a pay per view bout. Kongo came in 1-2-1 in the last two years, with losses to the top names in the UFC Heavyweight division relegating the 36 year old to gatekeeper status. Barry was 2-2 since 2009. Going into the bout, the loser had a better chance of getting cut than the winner did of earning a title shot. The story that will be told of the fight is how it got to be a main event and what happened in that 2:39 in the cage. It’s an amazing story, but not an all-timer. Because of that, Kongo-Barry ranks third on AHN’s unofficial ranking of Best UFC comebacks. It is the highest ranking non-title fight, beating out Mike Russow’s stoppage of Todd Duffee at UFC 114, Shonie Carters rabbit out of a hat against Matt Serra at UFC 31, and Chris Leben’s knockout of Terry Martin at UFN 11, which are respectively 5, 6, and 7 on the list. Number four is Brock Lesnar’s knockout of Shane Carwin. The fight had higher stakes--the heavyweight champion was returning to the cage after surgery to face the interim champion. It had bigger names and bolder storylines. The in cage action just didn’t measure up to Kongo-Barry. Carwin was a razor thin line away from winning the fight in the first round, and Lesnar had an incredible second-round comeback to win by submission, itself a surprising result. But a break between rounds makes it hard to match the instantaneous reversal of fortune we saw Sunday night. Ahead of Kongo/Barry are two title fights. The second best comeback was Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg II, for the Welterweight title at UFC 52. Hughes is a Hall of Famer and pioneer in the sport. Trigg was looking to erase a comeback loss to Hughes in their first fight, only to lose the same way in an even more stunning comeback. The storyline, significance, and personalities involved were matched by Hughes’ escape from the edge to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Number one is Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen for the UFC Middleweight title at UFC 117. In terms of title defenses and win streak, Silva is the greatest champion in UFC history, and he was facing a nemesis who had tracked him for more than a year, spouting insults along the way. No one expected Sonnen to live up to his talk, but for 23 minutes, that’s exactly what happened. Sonnen dominated the action and just had to stay conscious to take the title. Silva became MMA’s Doug Flutie, however, hitting a Hail Mary triangle choke to defend his belt. Both men were also tainted by controversy, which always helps a storyline. Silva was coming off a fight against Demian Maia, where UFC president Dana White threatened to cut him for his half-hearted performance and needed to make a statement. Sonnen tested positive for performance enhancements, making Silva’s ability to salvage a late win even more impressive. Republish Email Facebook Digg Twitter Buzz Up! For the avoidance of doubt, where the Work is a musical composition or sound recording, the synchronization of the Work in timed-relation with a moving image ("synching") will be considered a Derivative Work for the purpose of this License. All rights not expressly granted by Licensor are hereby reserved, including but not limited to the rights set forth in Sections 4(d) and 4(e). 4. Restrictions. The license granted in Section 3 above is expressly made subject to and limited by the following restrictions: You may publicly display the Work only under the terms of this License, and You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier for, this License with every copy of the Work You publicly display. You may not sublicense the Work. You must keep intact all notices that refer to this License and to the disclaimer of warranties. When You publicly display the Work, You may not impose any technological measures on the Work that restrict the ability of a recipient of the Work from You to exercise the rights granted to that recipient under the terms of the License. This Section 4(a) applies to the Work as incorporated in a Collective Work, but this does not require the Collective Work apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License. If You create a Collective Work, upon notice from any Licensor You must, to the extent practicable, remove from the Collective Work any credit as required by Section 4(c), as demanded. You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation. For the avoidance of doubt, You may only use the credit required by this clause for the purpose of attribution in the manner set out above and, by exercising Your rights under this License, You may not implicitly or explicitly assert or imply any connection with, sponsorship or endorsement by the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties, as appropriate, of You or Your use of the Work, without the separate, express prior written permission of the Original Author, Licensor and/or Attribution Parties. 5. Representations, Warranties and Disclaimer UNLESS OTHERWISE MUTUALLY AGREED TO BY THE PARTIES IN WRITING, LICENSOR OFFERS THE WORK AS-IS AND ONLY TO THE EXTENT OF ANY RIGHTS HELD IN THE LICENSED WORK BY THE LICENSOR. THE LICENSOR MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND CONCERNING THE WORK, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OF TITLE, MARKETABILITY, MERCHANTIBILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NONINFRINGEMENT, OR THE ABSENCE OF LATENT OR OTHER DEFECTS, ACCURACY, OR THE PRESENCE OF ABSENCE OF ERRORS, WHETHER OR NOT DISCOVERABLE. Sections 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 will survive any termination of this License. Subject to the above terms and conditions, the license granted here is perpetual (for the duration of the applicable copyright in the Work). Notwithstanding the above, Licensor reserves the right to release the Work under different license terms or to stop distributing the Work at any time; provided, however that any such election will not serve to withdraw this License (or any other license that has been, or is required to be, granted under the terms of this License), and this License will continue in full force and effect unless terminated as stated above. 8. Miscellaneous Each time You distribute or publicly digitally perform the Work (as defined in Section 1 above) or a Collective Work (as defined in Section 1 above), the Licensor offers to the recipient a license to the Work on the same terms and conditions as the license granted to You under this License.
