Critics and audiences cheered "Nader and Simin: A Separation" by Iran's Asghar Farhadi, who captured a best director prize for his haunting film "About Elly" at the event two years ago. The picture, telling the story of a crumbling marriage, examines the conflict between strict religious observance and the moral perspectives of the educated urban elite in Iranian society. "Just when it seemed impossible for Iranian film-makers to express themselves meaningfully outside the bounds of censorship, Asghar Farhadi's 'Nader and Simin: A Separation' comes along to prove the contrary," Hollywood Reporter critic Deborah Young wrote in a glowing review. The 11-day event threw the spotlight on Iran's embattled film-makers, offering a seat on the jury led by Italian-American actress Isabella Rossellini to banned director Jafar Panahi. However an Iranian court in December handed Panahi a six-year jail sentence and a 20-year film-making ban and though he is free on bail, he is barred from travelling abroad. Farhadi paid tribute to his friend Panahi while in Berlin and on opening night, festival director Dieter Kosslick read out a letter Panahi sent to the Berlinale. "They have condemned me to 20 years of silence. Yet in my dreams, I scream for a time when we can tolerate each other, respect each others opinions, and live for each other," Panahi wrote. Two separate reviewers' polls put "Nader and Simin" neck-and-neck with "The Turin Horse", a two-and-a-half-hour-long feature shot in black and white that has been billed the final film by Hungarian art-house darling Bela Tarr. The picture uses a traumatic incident in the life of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche as its point of departure to trace the hardscrabble lives of two peasants and their long-suffering steed. While many audiences found the repetitive real-time action and thin plot heavy-going, several critics praised the picture's striking visual style and unyielding vision. "It is a shame to think of this heroically uncompromising director shutting up shop, but if he does, 'The Turin Horse' is a magnificent farewell," Screen magazine reviewer Jonathan Romney wrote. Other well-received contenders included "Margin Call" starring Kevin Spacey and Demi Moore in a taut thriller about the start of the financial crisis, and British actor Ralph Fiennes's directorial debut "Coriolanus", a modern retelling of the Shakespeare tragedy in which he also stars. Vanessa Redgrave's riveting turn as his ambitious mother prompted speculation that she would pick up a Silver Bear prize for best actress. And German entry "If Not Us, Who" about the origins of the urban guerrilla outfit Red Army Faction as well as "The Forgiveness of Blood" on Albanian blood feuds drew applause. As the movie industry emerges from the financial crisis, the festival's European Film Market reported a strong year including a visit by Madonna to show clips from her sophomore effort as a film-maker to potential buyers. Last year's Golden Bear prize went to Turkish drama "Honey" starring a seven-year-old boy as a struggling pupil who loses his father in a freak accident.
