A man has been killed in the Indian state of Bihar for not paying 3 rupees (6 US cents) he owed to his friend, a grim reminder that despite the "economic turnaround" scripted by chief minister Nitish Kumar in the state, grinding poverty is still prevalent, and such paltry sums can be matters of life and death. The shocking incident took place at Nawkothi village in Begurasari district, not very far from Bihar's capital city of Patna. Police said Pankaj Thakur had a heated argument with Babloo Yadav who owed him 3 rupees. Subsequently, Pankaj took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Yadav. The victim was taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The police have arrested Thakur and also seized the knife used in the crime. This is not the first time that people have been killed for such a petty sum. Earlier, in Madhepura, another backward district of Bihar, a butcher had killed the eight-year-old son of a customer who owed him just 20 rupees for the meat he had bought. Quite in the same way, a youth was beaten to death in a north Bihar district when his bike knocked down and killed a goat. These incidents are reminders that the poverty situation in Bihar is still very alarming despite the state government's much-publicised claims that Bihar has scripted an "economic turnaround" under chief minister Mr Nitish Kumar and that Bihar's economy has grown at an annual rate of 11.35 per cent in the last five years of the NDA regime. "During the first five years since 1990 (the period when Mrs Rabri Devi was in power), Bihar's economy had grown at an annual rate of 3.50 percent. Thereafter, the economy has grown at an annual rate of 11.35 percent during the five years 2004-05 to 2008-09", says a report of the Bihar Economic Survey, 2009-10, conducted by the Bihar government.
