Special Report: Julian Assange versus the world
WASHINGTON - Hollywood has long had a weak spot for renegade computer hackers. In the 1983 film "War Games," a teenage whiz breaks into military data networks and almost sets off World War III. In "The Matrix," the 1999 blockbuster, a rebellious programer fights for humanity against soulless machines. And in this year's model, the hero of "Inception" hacks into, and manipulates, people's dreams. Dream-hacking is still probably beyond the capabilities of Julian Assange, the 39-year-old Australian-born computer programer who created and, until his arrest last week, served as editor in chief of the website WikiLeaks.
Justin Bieber tops list of most-viewed YouTube videos
LOS ANGELES - Teenager Justin Bieber had four of the top 10 most-watched music videos in the world on YouTube in 2010, with "Baby" taking claiming the top spot at more than 400 million views, YouTube said on Monday. The 16 year-old Canadian, who was first discovered in 2008 by posting home videos on YouTube, also saw "Never Say Never," "Never Let You Go" and "Somebody to Love Remix" make the most-watched videos from major music labels for 2010.
Activision sells 3.3 million Warcraft games on first day
SAN FRANCISCO - Activision Blizzard Inc <ATVI.O> sold 3.3 million copies of its latest "World of Warcraft" game in its first day on the market. The company said on Monday that "World of Warcraft: Cataclysm," which launched December 7, surpassed the record set by the previous "World of Warcraft" release in November 2008.
WikiLeaks rival Openleaks "coming soon": website
LONDON and run by Assange's former number two at WikiLeaks Daniel Domscheit-Berg, the site has no content on it at the moment apart from a logo and the message "Coming soon!"
Get smart: Techie gifts for fitness fanatics
NEW YORK - 'Tis the season of the smart workout, when mobile phones track miles run, treadmills interact with virtual trainers and computer chips render even jump ropes artificially intelligent. Experts say if you're techie gifting the fitness lover on your list, make sure the smart shoe fits and the app is apt.
New York critics name "Social Network" best film
LOS ANGELES - The New York Film Critics Circle on Monday named Facebook film "The Social Network" the best movie of the year, and gave its best director honor to the movie's maker, David Fincher. Armond White, chairman of the influential critics group and chief critic for The New York Press, said the choice did not come on the first tally of members, but they began to narrow their picks by a second round, eventually deciding on "Social Network."
Elizabeth Hurley announces marriage split on Twitter
LONDON - British actress and model Elizabeth Hurley used her Twitter account to announce that she had separated from her husband of three years, Indian businessman Arun Nayar. "Not a great day. For the record, my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware of this," the 45-year-old, who also runs her own swimwear business, wrote on the social messaging site.
Toshiba plant to make LCD panels for Apple: report
BANGALORE to build a factory for making small LCD panels, mainly to supply to Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhones, the Nikkei business daily said. The company's wholly owned unit, Toshiba Mobile Display Co, will construct the facility in Ishikawa prefecture and the plant will churn out low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels, which allow for high-resolution images, the paper said.
Underdogs Amazon and Target take aim at iTunes and Walmart
NEW YORK - As music retailers suffer ever shrinking sales, some of the most aggressive moves to boost business are being made by the perpetual runners-up in their respective sectors. The past year has seen heightened competitive positioning between Apple's iTunes store and Amazon for digital sales and Walmart and Target for CD sales. In both instances the latter merchant is bringing the fight to their larger competitor. Amazon batters iTunes daily with pricing promotions like the Daily Deal, while Target recently used huge marketing spending to challenge Walmart's dominance in country music.
Music labels reach fans with multiplatform apps
DENVER - The app is far too powerful a tool to be limited to mobile phones. In 2010, the developer and music industries took bold steps to apply this burgeoning distribution model to a range of new devices and platforms. Take Pandora, the personalized Internet radio service that became the killer app for music on the iPhone when it was first introduced in 2008. Having expanded to every available smart-phone platform, the Pandora app has since jumped to such new devices as the iPad, Internet-connected TVs and even automobiles, as more consumer electronics device manufacturers eagerly enter the app game.
