NBC ends late night wars: Conan is out, Leno is back
LOS ANGELES - Conan O'Brien will end his short-lived stint as host of "The Tonight Show" on Friday after signing a $45 million exit deal with NBC that ends two weeks of embarrassing on-air bickering and allows Jay Leno to return to the flagship late-night comedy program. After more than a week of negotiations, General Electric Co's NBC said it had agreed to release O'Brien from his contract after seven months, and that he would be free to take a new job elsewhere after September 1.
Sundance lets out a "HOWL" on opening night
PARK CITY, Utah - The Sundance Film Festival opened on Thursday proclaiming a return to rebellious and risky filmmaking by premiering Allen Ginsberg biopic "HOWL" and war documentary "Restrepo." Backed by actor and activist Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, the festival began in the 1980s to promote movies made outside Hollywood's mainstream studios, and this year's theme is renewing the independence it first championed.
Harrison Ford can't cure "Extraordinary Measures"
LOS ANGELES - Since "Extraordinary Measures," a tremulous medical drama about a father trying to save the lives of his children, is the first feature released by the newly constituted CBS Films, it's all too tempting to describe the piece as a TV movie, reminiscent of those disease-of-the-week affairs that used to clog the tube. That might be a cheap shot, but unfortunately, it's pretty close to the mark. The movie works on an unsubtle level; you'd have to be stonehearted not to respond to this tale of adorable tots in jeopardy. But it never rises above formula fare. The film has modest box office appeal but will have to overcome mixed reviews.
NBC chief says late-night debacle "Shakespearean"
LOS ANGELES - With Conan O'Brien departing NBC on Friday and Jay Leno resuming control of "The Tonight Show," NBC Universal TV entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the shake-up and what happens next: WHAT IS JAY LENO'S "TONIGHT SHOW" GOING TO BE LIKE -- HIS PREVIOUS "TONIGHT" OR "THE JAY LENO SHOW"? WILL HE STILL HAVE HIS CONTRIBUTORS? THE RACE TRACK?
Paul Reubens revives "Pee-Wee Herman Show" in L.A
LOS ANGELES - A funny thing happened to Paul Reubens on the way to his twilight years: He rediscovered the child within. After an absence of almost two decades, the actor is re-creating his inspired comic creation, the silly but sly-like-a-fox Pee-Wee Herman, a moppet diva trapped in a man's body. The mid-1980s Saturday-morning show "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" and two feature films were as much adult guilty-pleasure fare as they were kid-friendly. That remains the case, as evidenced by the ages of fans who flocked to L.A. Live's Club Nokia on opening night.
So, what exactly does a film producer do?
LOS ANGELES - Six years after the Producers Guild of America first defined what a producer does, its Producers Code of Credits has become an invaluable tool. The code not only helps explains who should be credited with an Oscar or Emmy, but it also gives everyone in the industry a way to determine what qualifies someone to hold the title of producer on a movie or television show.
UK music stars hold auction for Oxfam in Haiti
LONDON - Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys and Damon Albarn are among the British music stars who have contributed to an online auction to raise funds for Oxfam's emergency response to the earthquake in Haiti. Albarn, former frontman of Blur and co-creator of virtual band Gorillaz, will record a "bespoke" piece of music for the winning bidder, while Coldplay singer Chris Martin's "Viva La Vida" tour jacket -- signed by the band -- is also up for grabs.
Tech group to launch digital music file successor
LONDON - A leading technology company is set to launch a new digital music file format which will embed additional content for fans including lyrics, news updates and images in what could be a successor to the ubiquitous MP3 file. The music industry has been hammered by piracy in the last decade and is looking to develop new offerings to entice consumers to buy their music from legitimate sites, instead of taking it from illegal outlets.
"Avatar" ready for sixth box office win
LOS ANGELES - "Avatar" will take a bit longer to fly past the domestic and worldwide box office records set by "Titanic," but the sci-fi smash clearly is charting a similar course. When "Avatar" again tops the weekend box office in North America -- yes, when, not if, despite three wide releases hitting theaters Friday -- James Cameron's latest blockbuster will mark a sixth consecutive No. 1 frame.
Book tackles atom bomb horror, author eyes 3D film
LONDON - A new book follows a handful of Japanese who were lucky -- or unlucky -- enough to survive both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, and their shocking story could make it to the big screen in 3-D, its author said. Charles Pellegrino's "The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back," is the result of lengthy research, including extensive interviews with the survivors and those who dropped the weapons toward the end of World War Two. He and "Avatar" director James Cameron met one such person, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, not long before he died earlier this month aged 93, and Pellegrino believes it is their duty to commit his story to film.
