Search web search Home Singapore Asia Pacific World Business Entertainment Sports Technology Singapore Asia Pacific World Taiwan c.bank watches asset prices, no overheating yet Reuters - Wednesday, September 30 Send IM Story Print TAIPEI, Sept 30 - Taiwan's central bank is watching money supply and asset prices for evidence of overheating, but so far the island's stock and housing markets showed no signs of getting out of hand, the bank's governor said on Wednesday. "The central bank will be monitoring changes in money supply and asset prices," Governor Perng Fai-nan told lawmakers in parliament. "The new philosophy among central banks nowadays is to be concerned about asset prices." Perng also said that Taiwan's inflation would stay moderate over the next six months, allowing the central bank to maintain a loose monetary policy to help the economy recover from the global downturn. Analysts took the comments as an indication that interest rates are likely to remain at the their record low until the end of the year. Perng also played down the Taiwan dollar's <TWD=TP> recent gains, telling parliament it remained at competitive levels compared with the South Korean won <KRW=>. Taiwan and South Korea compete in several markets. The Taiwan dollar hit T$32.168 against the U.S. currency in early trade on Wednesday, its highest intraday level since Oct. 6, helped by a surge of fund inflows into the Taiwanese stock market.
