Defense Sec. Robert Gates To Undergo Surgery
January 23, 2009 10:51 a.m. EST

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Defense Sec. Robert Gates is undergoing surgery on Friday to fix a torn ligament in his left arm. Deputy Defense Sec. Gordon England will temporarily serve as head of the Pentagon during the medical procedure.
In his first press conference as Defense secretary of the Obama administration, Gates said he injured his arm during the holidays while "trying to attach a snowplow blade to a tractor up in the Northwest... and managed to tear the biceps tendon from the bone."
The 65-year-old former Bush administration official had broken his arm last February after falling outside his home. He joked on Thursday he considers his present injury "to be a step up from falling on the ice."
"I expect to be back -- back at work on Saturday, though again in a sling," the secretary added.
Gates, who has been widely praised for his bipartisanship, was the "designated successor" during President Barack Obama's inauguration on Tuesday and stayed at an undisclosed location while millions outside converged in the Capitol for the historic swearing-in.
As designated successor, Gates served as next in line to run the government in case a catastrophe occurs, something that was a special concern to the outgoing and incoming administrations, the presidential transition being the first one to be held during a time of war.
Under the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, Gates is sixth in line to succeed the president, following the vice president, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate President Pro Tempore Robert Byrd (D-WV), the Secretary of State and the Treasury Secretary.
