Chinese FM, Clinton talk about bilateral relations
AP - 2 hours 1 minute ago
BEIJING - Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has renewed China's resolve to work with the United States to strengthen bilateral ties during a telephone call to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
During Friday's call, Yang also extended China's congratulations to the newly inaugurated President Barack Obama and his administration, Xinhua said. The exchange came during the 30th anniversary of official relations between the two sides.
"China-U.S. relations are one of the most important bilateral relations in the world," Xinhua cited Yang as saying. "China is willing to work with the United States to constantly view and handle bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective."
Yang said Beijing hopes to keep strengthening dialogue and maintaining high-level contacts.
The global financial crisis has dominated recent discussions between the two countries, with both sides pledging to fight the turmoil at the latest round of high-level China-U.S. economic talks in December.
Among key agreements, they promised $20 billion to finance imports by developing countries and cooperation on regulating financial risks. Both sides also stressed the importance of cooperation to combat a potential rise in trade protectionism.
But potential friction lurks. Critics say Beijing is not doing enough to stimulate domestic consumption and is still trying to support its exporters, which could strain relations with the U.S. and other trading partners
And Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner on Friday said President Barack Obama believes China is "manipulating" its currency.
Geithner's comments raise the possibility that the Obama administration will take a tougher line with China than former President George W. Bush.
American manufacturers say the Chinese yuan is still significantly undervalued, making Chinese goods cheaper for U.S. consumers and American products more expensive in China.
