Pacific meeting on Fiji sanctions to go ahead
AP - 1 hour 50 minutes ago
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A special meeting of 16 Pacific Islands Forum states to discuss possible sanctions against Fiji will proceed next week, the forum chairman said Saturday.
Forum chairman and Niue premier Toke Talagi said he had spoken to Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, and they had agreed to hold the meeting, as planned, on Tuesday in Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby.
Earlier this week, Fiji military leader Frank Bainimarama called for the meeting to be postponed and said he could not attend because he was busy leading relief efforts in Fiji after floods killed at least 11 people.
The meeting will consider toughening sanctions against Fiji, but experts say Pacific neighbors have few options to force the regime to restore democracy.
More than two years after Bainimarama seized power in a bloodless military coup, there is little sign he will keep his pledge of returning the country _ once one of the region's most powerful _ to democratic rule.
Fiji is to be represented at the meeting by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
